Rainy days and Mondays always get me down ... are you familiar with that song by The Carpenters? Now personally, I LOVE Mondays. I'm always ready to get back to the routine, back to better eating and exercise after the weekend. But my #4 son, he really struggles. He is a homebody (like his mommy) and after a couple days in the comfort of home, it's really hard for him to go back to school. Once we get past Monday, he's usually ok again ... until next Monday.
In addition to his generalized anxiety, he has a weather phobia. We're not sure where it came from, but we've been struggling with it for a few years now. Wind, rain, thunder and lightening ... he has a hard time handling it. This past weekend was a challenge!
He'd been invited to a birthday party on Saturday ... storms were forecast. He really wanted to go, but I wasn't sure if he'd be able to overcome his anxieties to do so. The party got changed to Friday evening, which I originally thought was a good thing (weather wise) but Friday night turned out to be crazy with rain, thunder and lightening.
The hubs and I were actually going out to a movie. I didn't want to discuss the possible incoming storm with #4 (as the anticipatory anxiety is often even worse than the actual event, he hadn't checked the weather report to notice the possibility) but I did bring it up with his brothers, who I was leaving in charge. I told them not to force him to go if he was anxious, but try to encourage him. I told them to be prepared to go get him if it got bad (the party was just a couple of houses away) and refreshed where what to do (he has a couple "safe spots" in the house, rooms away from windows, with tv/video game distractions). My older boys rolled their eyes ... but I like to cover things just in case.
As we exited the movie ... what a storm! I was anxious to get home and check on #4. He had gone to the party. He had needed to come home from the party. The storm passed pretty quick, and he actually went back to the party (thank heavens for accommodating hosts aware of his issues!) That night, the storm returned with a fury! For over an hour around 4:00 in the morning it was constant flashes and thunder that rocked the house. #4 managed to sleep through it amazingly enough!
Saturday was rainy too ... #5's soccer game was cancelled (although there were still some teams playing on the soggy fields). More rain Sunday ... no thunder and lightening until the evening. Poor #4 had to retreat to his bedroom because there are just too many windows out in the family room and kitchen.
He was actually ok this morning. Last week was a miserable Monday morning, and there were no weather worries that day. He doesn't check the forecast as much as he used to, so I don't know if he is aware that thunderstorms are forecast for later in the day. Fingers crossed they don't hit while he's at school.
The cooler, rainy weather did impact me over the weekend. In addition to feeling anxiety over my son's anxiety, it just made me want to jump back in bed and snuggle under the covers. There was a neighborhood 5k race Saturday morning, but I just couldn't pull myself out of bed. I did take a nap Saturday afternoon ... unheard of for me! It was a soup and warm breadsticks kind of day. We even pulled out the hot chocolate maker! Sometimes the cooler weather can motivate me to move ... just to warm up. But not this weekend! Linking up with MIMM.
Very happy to have a Monday Morning where #4 didn't have a melt down. It's hard not to let those emotions affect me. It can be hard to get into my Zumba class when I'm feeling emotionally off. Sometimes Zumba is enough to snap me out of it too, though. I still go!
...and it's time for me to head out! Zumba, here I come!

Since I've started going to five different Zumba classes on the weekdays, I really look forward to each one. They all have something to offer in songs, style and steps. It's amazing how many different numbers there are ... I don't know how the instructors remember all the choreography. I'm a follower, that's for sure!
- Monday: It was a rough morning at home with my #4, who didn't want to go to school. Apparently I wasn't the only one, as Nina came in late with similar stories of her children. Luckily I'm not super pressed for time in the morning, so it was all good.Great class as always ... highest for the HRM burn and average heart rate.
- Tuesday: Even coming straight from dropping off the elementary kids, I was a little late. This class can look deceptively simple at times, but I often get great numbers here, perhaps because I am more familiar with most of the songs. Got my high for the Fitbit burn in this class this week.
- Wednesday: I always come to this class late, because it always starts late. Well today ... it had already begun as I walked in. I think I only missed one song, and I still got my full hour in. I do think it threw me off just a bit to start, had a little trouble getting my heart rate up today.
- Thursday: Didn't quite get my heart rate up as much today. Class also ran a little short (I was actually there early). But did have a couple of my favorite Claudia numbers.
- Friday: Late start here today, with schedules, the class was cut a little short today. There were some balloons floating in the gym and a couple of the ladies helped grab them down to the delight of some of the little girls who were there. Couldn't help but smile as they ran around with them. Quite a few numbers I wasn't as familiar with today, but I'm not going to get familiar unless we do them!

Well, I was really hoping to stay an entire week under 150. It didn't happen this week. I actually made it through the weekend, which is usually the hardest part for me. I had a 30K Saturday. Sunday wasn't wonderful, but it wasn't bad either. I had the usual up Monday morning (still under 150 though) and thought this would be the week! But then Tuesday morning ... a little bump up over 150. Not sure why. I had a really good day Monday. TOM did come visit on Tuesday, but honestly I can't say that I've really seen a correlation with weight gain during that time of the month for me. Perhaps some cravings kicked in some ... I was having a harder time controlling calories this week. I was also really dragging during the day. I had to lay down for a quick nap here and there, something I rarely do.I got in my Zumba Mon-Fri, and my hour of elliptical every day. I had some treadmill time most days (at an incline), and even hit the bike a couple times. I got in weights once.
NUMBERS: Well, my last week's 2.6 loss is cancelled out by the 2.8 shift back this week. But, my average for the week is actually down a bit! Despite the up for my official weigh-in this morning, I like seeing that it has been down overall, that it didn't bump as high as it had in the past. I had a weekly deficit of -4503, which I consider good. Daily intake was up, averaging at 2200. I upped my average burn a bit, to 3016.

I've been a Fitbit Fan(atic) for over four years now. I'll admit, I have been rather proud of myself that during that time I've never worn it in the water, accidentally washed it, or lost it. My streak came to an end this past week.
I was at my son's soccer game, when I felt for my Fitbit. It wasn't there. I had changed from my workout wear into actual clothes, so I assumed I had simply forgotten to transfer the device ... I'm pretty good at remembering, but that does happen from time to time. Do steps really count if you're not wearing your Fitbit? *Ü*
We went home, and I looked around. No little Fitbit One to be found. I could then distinctly remember I HAD reattached it after I had changed earlier ... which meant one thing. It was LOST! It had fallen off somewhere. Oh no!
Some time ago, I had heard of a helpful app called BTL Explorer. It SHOULD be called the "Find My Fitbit" app! It can detect the Blue Tooth signal coming from a Fitbit. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but if you are close enough (you need to be within about 20feet or so) it will pick up the signal. It will show you if it is a One, Zip or Flex. There is a number displayed next to the device name, and the lower the number, the closer you are to the device.
I opened up the app ... my husband's Flex appeared, three of the boys were home, and their three Zips showed up. No One. I knew it was a long shot, but I decided to go back to the soccer field and walk around.
I parked in the same spot and retraced my steps. It had been a bit of a walk in. I went to the spot where I had sat down watching the warmup. I walked around the entire field ... as I had walked around the field during the game. I was about to give up when... "One" appeared on the app! My Fitbit was out there. It was close by! Unfortunately, by this time it was completely dark! I hadn't thought to bring a flashlight, so I was on my hands and knees, running my fingers through the grass, trying to use the light from my phone, while watching the app, playing hot/cold with the changing numbers.
I found it!
I was SO happy to be reunited with my Fitbit! I am addicted to the feedback. I just thought I'd share my little story, and give a shout out to the BTL Explorer app (it's free!). I mentioned it to my boys, so they would know there is an option if the Fitbit falls off. You DO need to know the general area for this to work ... but it worked for me. I then used the app to narrow down WHERE exactly Hub's Flex was (he hadn't been able to locate it in a couple days) ... the numbers grew smaller as I approached the closet, then one side of the closet. I found it in the pocket of a pair of shorts.
It's a handy little app to have!
And speaking of soccer ... it's been a tough season for my munchkin. He's coming off an undefeated season last Spring. He scored a goal (usually more than one) in every game. This year? They hadn't been able to score yet. But Thursday night ... the first (and still only) goal for the team!
My little guy had HIS Fitbit on ... he gets quite a few steps during these soccer games. I haven't made it back to MY soccer in a while. I need to. It is such a workout, I really need to get my motivation up to attempt it. It's at the same time as my Zumba, and it's hard to have to choose between the two. But seeing my munchkin out there running and kicking does put in me a soccer mood.

I haven't been into movies much lately. Going to them on the big screen ... it's so expensive. I have a hard time sitting for two hours, and I always over-indulge. I just can't seem to say no to the popcorn and treats. I'm a little more comfortable at home, snuggling with the hubs ... popcorn is still a probable part of a DVD experience.
The majority of my TV/Movie watching is done while I workout. I'm on the elliptical or treadmill, or I even have something on in the background while I work with weights. I tend to favor television series over movies for my workouts, although I have watched many a movie while exercising through the years.
I am a "Pride and Prejudice" fan. I'd read the book "Austenland" and was looking forward to the movie. Not enough to go see it in the theaters ... and hubs wasn't particularly keen to see it either. I was more than happy to wait until it hit DVD. I still wasn't in a rush, I so put it on hold at the local library, even though I had to wait several weeks for a copy to come in.
My hold was available last Monday. I picked it up and wondered when to watch it. While I don't mind the start/stop as I watch shows (as I'm usually doing 10-20 minute exercise spurts throughout the day) I do like to finish a movie in a day. Last Tuesday was too busy, with double doctor appointments (a check-up for me, and wisdom teeth out for #1 son). I just didn't get around to it Wed or Thurs, and Friday is always a bit crazy. I ended up getting in plenty of exercise on Saturday, so Sunday was my day left to watch it (as it is due back at the library today).
It was only 90 minutes, and although I have been taking Sunday's as a rest day, I figured I could get that much in. Easy elliptical ... a simple walk on the treadmill. I got in a couple 15min sessions early in the day and then ... I was dragging. I felt like I wanted my rest day. I listened to my body and decided to take it easy. I took a nice nap. I made dinner for the kids. Chicken soup and breadsticks. I had decided I was fine with just the 30 minutes, but my tummy felt full and I actually wanted/needed to move again. So I went down and did another 30 minutes.
Not quite enough to finish my show. I didn't quite have the energy to add ANOTHER 30 minutes, so I saved that and finished it up this morning. It was a cute story (as mentioned, I had read the book so I knew how it ended). Just in time to get it back to the library today. I was determined not to return it unwatched! Movie motivation :)
As I was having my Sunday,
the hubs was in Seattle, at the SeaHawks game ...
I have anxiety issues just looking at the photograph!
I know I've been late with my Motivation Monday posts for the past several weeks. I was really trying to prep the posts the day before, so they were ready to go first thing in the morning... but then I've started focusing so much on my weekend, that often I needed it to be officially "over" before I did my recap. I also felt I needed to see my Monday morning weigh-in to see what the scale shift reflected. Monday mornings are a bit crazy with kids, Zumba and my weekly stop to shop. Then I take a breath and get my post done :)
Happy to say ... this morning, I was still under 150! Just barely ... 149.8. That's my goal though, to stay under that number. It is a "magic" number for me, mentally, but also physically. For some reason that is the tipping point for my body.
It was a pretty good weekend. Yesterday, my hour of exercise didn't quite combat my calories. My intake was slightly higher than my burn. Saturday turned out to be a 30K day! It was a sports Saturday. #5 had a soccer game ... parking is such a nightmare that we ended up walking quite a ways before/after the game. Then #2 had a couple basketball games ... at the high school with a track above the court. I walked while I watched the games, and jogged the track while we waited the hour between games. Friday, I got in my Zumba and elliptical and banked my calories, as the hubs and I went out to dinner. I managed to keep my intake 500+ below my burn for the day. I call the whole weekend a success.

I've been enjoying my Zumba classes. Every weekday. Monday through Friday. It's how I start my mornings. I go to five different locations. Five different classes. Different songs, instructors and styles. I keep track of my numbers with a Heart Rate Monitor (PolarFT4) and my Fitbit. It's fun for me to stack my stats side by side too see how they compare.
I never got around to posting the stats last Saturday,
so it's a double dose this week.
- Monday: I usually hit SouthZiders in Draper, but my son (#4) wasn't feeling well and stayed home from school. Later in the afternoon after his brothers were home, I did sneak down to my home gym and did a Zumba workout to my YouTube playlist. At home, I am in control of the music, and I try to keep them all very bouncy songs to get a higher burn and more steps. I wish the transition between songs was a little faster. It was a good workout, but not as fun as being in the group atmosphere.
- Tuesday: #4 wasn't sick, but he did have a panic attack before school. He has a weather phobia and it was a stormy morning. There were many tears (his, and mine as I went into the school to explain the situation to the office and the school counselor). Tuesday, Zumba starts early, and I barely make it with a normal drop-off. I was 30 minutes late. I did a little YouTube at home after to get to my full hour.
- Wednesday: As my first two Zumba attempts this week were not normal, I was ready for the class experience. The class is supposed to start at 9:00 ... I show up at 9:10 and still usually end up standing around for another 10 minutes. But it's always good once it gets going.
- Thursday: Really good class today. I could tell my heart rate was up, and I was super sweaty! Although the calories aren't the highest for the week, my "in zone" time and average heart rate were the highest in this class. An extra few minutes can make a difference in the total calories, and this class did stop at exactly one hour.
- Friday: I always really enjoy this class. It almost ended shy of an hour, but then there was one more upbeat song for those who wanted to (after the cool down!).
- Monday: Yea ... back to Southziders! I'd only missed one week, but it felt like forever since I'd been there! Good numbers, it's pretty much always that way in this class.
- Tuesday: Nice to get a full class, after only getting half last week. I didn't get in my usual walk to/from, as I came directly from dropping off kidlets, and had to leave for an appointment immediately afterward. The walk was always a nice addition to this Zumba class.
- Wednesday: It was a themed day ... "Get Nerdy". I had forgotten, but I don't know that I would have (I have tried to for some of the themes in the past). There was some great get-ups though. I was personally having an off morning after not getting much (if any) sleep. While I have friends in the other classes, I don't really know anyone here. Today ... I wanted that anonymity. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to overcome my exhaustion and emotional state, but I did get good numbers.
- Thursday: Missing Claudia today ... it's nice to have multiple instructors so that when one is gone, the class goes on. It was really high energy today. Lower numbers on the calorie burn/step count because the class was cut a little short (as I think the instructors were heading to another class themselves), but again this class was the high for the average heart rate.
- Friday: The school schedule shifts on Fridays, with late start at the high school and middle school. I was so happy to find this class, with a 10:00 starting time. We had to change churches again. Very nice to have a backup. A couple numbers I wasn't as familiar with today, but I'm getting better and picking up new choreography. We did Baliando two different ways :)
So, there are my numbers and recap/reviews of my classes for the past couple weeks. This last week, it seemed almost effortless to get my heart rate up. Some weeks, it just doesn't seem to want to, even when I feel like I'm putting the same amount of effort into it!
I've really enjoyed all my classes. I look forward to them, and I leave feeling like I got a good workout, and instead of being tired, I'm energized for the day! Thanks to all my instructors!

Hey, hey, hey ...my weekly weigh-in (as well as several during the week) is UNDER 150! Yea! I feel like I've been stuck just a few pounds up for months. I have actually hit this milestone before, in January and in March, but couldn't quite keep it up ... or down in this case (you can see all my weekly weigh-ins here).
I had a good week. Controlling caloric intake, getting in the exercise. I actually had a good weekend too though. By that, I mean I had a rather blah/boring weekend. For food and fitness, boring and blah is better than birthday cake, eating out, family get-togethers, even though those types of weekends are more fun!
EXERCISE: This past week, I got in my hour of elliptical every day, including Saturday and Sunday. Good Zumba workouts Mon-Fri (I'll post my Zumba numbers and reviews tomorrow). I have not been good at getting in my mile jog, but I have had quite a bit of treadmill time this past week. Instead of going for speed, I've upped the incline. 10 is far as my machine goes. It's a little hike while I watch a show. I got in a bike ride last Friday night, but haven't been back on the bike since. I've meant to, I've wanted to, but I generally leave it until the end of the day, and I've been occupied helping with homework most evenings.
EATING: My intake was high last Friday, but I was able to stay in control Sat/Sun. All my weekdays I was able to easily stay under 2000. Still need to work on quality, instead of just quantity control. This past week, I actually took a bit of scrambled egg! I haven't had that in ...30 years? If you don't know about my Eating Issues, that is a HUGE deal for me. I've been doing a little better getting in some fruits too.
NUMBERS: Today's weight of 147.6 is -2.6 pounds down from last week. Three weeks in a row with a loss, although this is the biggest one! Average weight was also down, -2.37. I was able to keep my average intake under 2000. That is huge for me. That hasn't happened for a while. 1921 was the actual number. Average daily burn was 2951. This gave me a total deficit for the week of -5715.
No big plans for this weekend either ... so maybe I can get an entire week under 150, no bump up. Check back next Friday!
Onto the Friday Five ...
I've enjoyed the return to routine that the school schedules bring. It seems synonymous with success for me. Fridays for me, still have some of the same stuff, but the schedules are skewed. The high school and middle school has late start. The elementary has early out. I tend to sleep in a bit. I have an extra drop-off (normally I can drop off high school and middle school together, but I have to make separate trips on Fridays). After I drop off the elementary boys, I have about one hour before I need to get #3 to middle school. I've been making a quick run to the store during this hour. This morning, there were FIVE items we were almost out of. Here's a peek at today's shopping list and a little about our family food ...
- Grandma Sycamore White Bread: Yes ... I know I should be getting the whole wheat stuff. #1 (and sometimes the hubs) are the only ones who will eat it though. The rest of the family will only eat the fluffy white stuff. And it can't be a generic brand, it has to be Grandma Sycamore.
- Apple Slices: During the summer, we went back to regular ol' apples, but school back in session, these pre-sliced, non-browning apples are a lifesaver in lunches.
- Sliced Turkey: I make a turkey sandwich for three of the kidlets each school day (the other does peanut butter and honey). I'll grab a slice of turkey here and there too, for a quick snack and a punch of protein.
- Eggs: The kids have been enjoying scrambled eggs in the morning. As mentioned above, I actually ate a few bites myself. We've been going through a LOT of eggs. I need to keep them on hand for baking too. I did grab some of the Egg Beaters today too.
- Bacon: Every Sunday we have a big family breakfast. Every Sunday ... there is bacon. It has been so expensive lately! I'd been hoping for a sale or something, but with Sunday almost here, I went ahead and picked some up. My boys love bacon ... who doesn't?
I'll usually end up making a couple trips to the grocery store throughout the week. I do try to shop sales and get the best prices. Today's trip was to Sam'sClub. I usually get milk there too, but it is on sale at Smiths for a slightly better price, and I do like to get the fuel rewards they offer. I'll hit Walmart every once in a while (a lot less, since I've been going to Kmart with my FitStudio points each week). It's always a challenge trying to keep things on hand, without overbuying, and having them go bad. I quickly packed up #3's lunch after shopping, before dropping him at school ... I hadn't been able to make it earlier, as we were out of bread and apples! I bought four loaves today.I hope that gets us through to next Friday!

It's Monday. Last week, I had child home from school sick. The week before it was the Labor Day holiday. The week before, school had started at the high school, but the middle/elementary didn't start until Tuesday. So I feel like today is my first real "Monday" on the back-to-school schedule.
When I write up my "Day to Day Doings" (daily stats and journal entry) I note the type of day it was: Good, Ok, Bad ... this is in reference to my eating/exercise, not if I personally had a good day emotionally (although they are often related). My weekends are almost always "BAD" as far as food and fitness, although often filled with family fun.
This past weekend was pretty blah ... nothing much going on at all. Ironically, that made it a "good" (or at least better) weekend on the eating/exercise scale. I ate a little too much on Friday, but also got in a lot of activity, so I still had a deficit (and dropped just a bit for Saturday weigh-in). On Saturday, I didn't get in as much exercise as I do during the week (no Zumba) but I did get in an hour of elliptical and a 40minute walk. Good for a Saturday. I also totally kept calories in check! Sunday, I got in an hour on the elliptical. Calories were ok ... and an "ok" day in my rating book (but better than "bad").
My lower weigh-in on Friday ... I think that motivated me to be extra good, to see if I could get it to drop just a bit more. I was there on the 150 threshold, and I DID drop into the 149s Sat/Sun. It's been a while since I've seen those numbers. I was a bit disappointed this morning when weight was back up to 153.3 ... but I am always higher Monday mornings. I was just hoping it wouldn't have that big a jump (I'd been 149.6 Sunday morning) as I really wasn't bad on Sunday. But it's better than the last several weeks, which were always even higher (155/156).
Funny how both a low weigh-in, and a high weigh-in can be motivating. I saw the lows, and felt encouraged and excited to keep up the good work. When I see the bump up, I'm motivated to get it back down. It can be the reverse though ... you see a low number and feel like you can let up some. You see a high number and just give up, because it's not working. A lot of it just depends on your perspective.
I'm feeling pretty positive right now ... hoping to have my usual loss as I get back into the Mon-Thurs routine. Hoping that my high, being lower than in past week, will result in a low at the end of the week. Hoping to drop under 150 and stay there! I was great to get a peek at the scale shift, now just to make it permanent!
How was your weekend?

Is it the start of school, the return to routine? Is the new medication helping with nervous eating? I've been able to better control my calories during the week (keeping them under 2000) ...weekends are still bad though. I wasn't at all surprised by the up Monday morning. I was happy it wasn't quite as up as it had been the last couple week. Even with some kinks (a sick kid on Monday, same child having a panic attack Tuesday morning ... Zumba was affected both days) I had a good week.
Despite the difficulties, I did get in my Zumba Mon-Fri. I got in an hour of elliptical every day. I got in some treadmill time ... mostly walking, but upping the incline for quite a bit of it. I even jogged a whole mile! It has been a while. I got in several riding/reading sessions on the stationary bike, and did do weights on Wednesday. Not sure if it was the weights or the jog, but my legs were sore Thurs/Fri in my calves and quads.
Fri/Sat/Sun were horrible as far as food. Friday just added up. Saturday there were donuts in the morning and "The Cheesecake Factory" in the evening. Sunday was spent at the beach, so quite a bit of sitting and snacking. But Mon-Thurs, I was able to keep calories in check every day. Still not the best quality of calories, but at least controlling quantity.
NUMBERS: Even with a low last week, I was down .8 this week *Ü* My average dropped 1.18. I actually only had a -475 deficit for the week (hard to overcome the bad weekend eats). Average in 2343, Average out 2883.
Onto the FRIDAY FIVE ...
I'm normally an ipod gal. I have one set up in my car, so I don't have to listen to all the commercials and radio hosts jabbering. I like having control of my song selection too ... but with the ipod, I don't hear the NEW stuff much, to know what I like enough to buy and add to said ipod. So I do go through phases where I'll turn back to the radio. Today I thought I'd feature five songs that I've been happy to hear, and I'm sure I'll be adding to my collection.
- Shake it Off: Has anyone NOT heard this song? It is just bouncy and fun.
- All About That Bass: Another new one making a splash. Can't help but dance a little.
- Love Runs Out: The hubs really likes this one. It has been introduced in one of my Zumba classes. I liked the song, but didn't love the routine ... but it's been growing on me more and more.
- Bailando: This one I heard first in Zumba, in Spanish. When I heard it one the radio it really surprised me. I do like a little bit of English, like knowing what they are singing about. Three different Zumba classes do this song quite often ... two are completely different routines.
- Maps: This song has become a bit of a running joke in the family. Every single time I have the radio on in the car, this song comes on. Every. Single. Time. Originally, I liked the song. Then I got sick of it. But now, it causes such a reaction ("It's YOUR song Mom!") that I am happy to hear it. Following, following, following ...
Isn't it great when a favorite song comes on the radio? This viral video is making the rounds too, but if you haven't seen it, take a minute to check it out. It's sure to bring a smile to your day!

I while back, I posted about attempting to wear at hat for some of my workouts (Hats and Hair). Since then, my little black cap has become a pretty regular feature at Zumba. I just never knew what to do with my bangs, they'd get all sweaty and lose whatever curl they had when I first arrived. The hat hides the hair, and also helps to catch a bit of the sweat, so it's not dripping down my face. On the occasional day we've Zumba-ed outside, I was grateful to have the hat to shade my eyes from the sun.
The problem with the hat, is what happens when I take it off. My poor bangs are completely crazy! So the hat can NOT come off, until I'm home and can do something about my hat hair!
Do YOU get hat hair?

I know many people dread Mondays and live for the weekends. I am the opposite. I like the routine of Mon-Thurs and the shifting schedule for Sat/Sun can stress me out so much! But this past weekend was good. Not great as far as food and fitness, but for fun with family there will be a lot of good memories.
Eating was NOT good ... after my low Friday morning, I was up a pound for Saturday, up another Sunday morning, and up again this morning. While I did over-indulge, I know I didn't eat 10,500 extra calories. So here's hoping I can get the numbers back down pretty quick.
Unfortunately, this Monday morning isn't starting off stellar. This blog post is late (sorry!) I slept in and didn't get my morning workout. #4 is feeling sick and staying home from school, which keeps me home (no Zumba). I'll get in what I can. Crazy schedule this week with sports and such. But at least with #1's nineteenth birthday yesterday, "birthday week" is behind us, so I shouldn't be tempted by treats at every turn!
Wanna peek at our weekend?
Saturday started with the first soccer game of the season for #5. He does not look happy in this picture does he? They lost, didn't get a goal (although there were several close ones!) After an undefeated season in the Spring, he is used to winning. It's good to have to learn to deal with a loss. He's now the younger of the crowd (3rd/4th grade), it's a bigger field, so a lot more running. I could tell he was tired. He did get about 7000 steps in. Fun to have a Fitbit to track it all.
In the evening, #1 chose The Cheesecake Factory for his birthday dinner. I'm not a big cheesecake fan myself, but the older boys and Hubs really enjoy it. That was a pricey meal!
On of the gifts #1 requested was this
This is a SHOCKING game ... literally!
When the music stops and the light goes from red to green, hurry and press the button. If you are the last one, you get a shock. Levels from 1-4 in intensity. There was a LOT of laughter over the past weekend in regards to this game!
Normally we spend Sunday at church, but it was such a nice day, and probably the last chance to take the waverunners out this season (and #1's last chance for a couple years!) to we headed up to the lake. Maga, Aunt Ana and her boys joined us. Other than a bit of wind, it was a beautiful and relaxing day. I'd planned to make #1 a nice birthday dinner but we got home too late. I did make his favorite treat (homemade Oreos) as I hadn't been able to find our usual Oreo Ice Cream cake.
So I didn't get a lot of steps on Sunday ... didn't hit 10K even, but that was ok, as I'd already completed my Pact for the week. Calories in exceeded calories out Fri/Sat & Sun. That's pretty usual for my weekend. Then I have to try and make up for it Mon-Thursday. So I'd better wrap up this post and get going!
How was your weekend?

- Southziders: I'm always ready to get back to Zumba Monday mornings after the weekend break. It was a holiday (Labor Day) and I was so happy that Nina was still holding class, not taking the day off. In fact, Nina was on fire! She had SO much energy and is so fun to watch.
- Marian's Class: This class is held at my church. On Sunday, there had been an issue with the sound system, and it did cross my mind that it might also impact Zumba. It did. The sound was horrible! We ended up moving outside and playing the music out of Marian's car (as we've done a couple times before). It was a lovely morning, it actually felt great to be outside. I was glad I had my hat to keep the sun out of my eyes. Those driving probably wondered what was going on in the church parking lot!
- MZL: A bit of a late start again, but always a good class once it gets going. A couple new numbers I liked but wasn't familiar with ... I always improve with familiarity. Usually this one goes overtime a bit, I was a bit disappointed when it stopped at the hour exactly.
- Claudia&Co: I got my heart rate up much better this week. Peppier numbers perhaps? I also noticed they really had the songs ready, playing them back to back with no waiting in between. I was a couple minutes late (time showing just 59 minutes, but that was on me).
- Heather Jones: Friday mornings have a different school schedule (late start) and I head out directly after dropping of my middle-schooler. When I got to the church, there was funeral prep in progress. Luckily we had a backup church to go to. Great workout today! My heart rate was up from the get go. This class IS one of the most energetic ... I also ate breakfast. I usually don't eat before Zumba. Hmmmm... I wonder if that had anything to do with it or not.
That was Zumba this week. It felt great. I had a bit of a dip a few weeks ago, I wondered if I was getting burned out. I just wasn't enjoying it the way I had been. This week, the joy was back. I left every class energized and happy. I'd like to have every class over 400 on the HRM, and 7000 steps. I was really close in several, but only hit those numbers on Friday.

Weekly Weigh in, and I was actually excited about it this week. It had been a good week for me. I felt like it would be reflected on the scale, and it was. 151 ... I haven't been there in a while, since about April in fact (Weekly Weigh-Ins).
I originally lost weight eight years ago. Through the years, I have been struggling to maintain, and lose the gains. There have been ups and downs. For my most dramatic drops (in 2006 and 2013) I had success in late spring/early summer. Through the years though, in MY memory, I always seem to struggle, starting around April and through the summer months. When school gets back in session, and there is a return to the routine, I do better. It was interesting to plug the numbers into a graph and see that they didn't actually reflect my feelings. I'd have dips in the Spring, ups in the middle of Winter ... I did know I was in trouble at the end of 2012, dealing with a bit of depression there.
I don't have 2014 on this graph yet ... I actually was lower in January and March (just 150 "low"), and then upped in April and have been feeling stuck for several months now (at 152/153). But looking at the graph, a lot of the lines gravitate to just that area. Not sure if that's my body's "happy place" ... I spent almost all of 2010 right around where I am now (and have been for almost a year, no big changes since the end of 2013). I'd like to lose about 15 pounds and get back to 135, but anything under 150 is actually fine by me. I know it's just a number on the scale, but I do want to get there.
As I mentioned, this was a good week. Well ... the weekend was NOT good. It was SO bad in fact! Family gatherings on Saturday and Sunday, eating out, birthday cake. Huge up on the eating, very little exercise. But starting Monday, even with it being a holiday, I took control again. I really enjoyed every Zumba class this week and just left each one happy and energized. I got in my elliptical every day, did a little treadmill, and reading while riding the bike. I did a weights workout once too. #4 has engaged me in badminton or ping pong almost every day.
The eating improved too. On the weekdays, I kept calories in check at 2000 or under every day. It is always a challenge for me. This girl likes to eat! But it felt a bit easier this week. NUMBERS: Down 2.9 pounds from last Friday. High was 155.9 on Monday morning to the low today (for a total fluctuation of 4.9 pounds). Average weight was down -.04. Even with my horrible weekend (3000+ calories ingested both Sat/Sun) I had a weekly deficit of -3083. Average intake 2164 and average burn 2935 (with very little exercise on Sat/Sun dragging that down).
Hopefully, if I can continue weekdays like this week, and control the weekends, maybe I can get to goal (under 150) and stay there!
On to the Friday Five.
I mentioned, I've been getting some stationary bike in many days. I read while I ride. I also read while I wait at pickups, after school or sports practice, or when I take the kids to play (we spent a couple hours at a trampoline place on Tuesday). I read before bed. I read a lot, and I'm a fast reader too, so I've gone through quite a few books lately. I did spend a little time on GoodReads rating and reviewing, but thought I'd spotlight five recent reads here ...
I've mentioned before, that although I'm not a teenager, I do like a lot of the Young Adult fiction out there. Post-Apocalyptic, Dystopian stuff. So many books now are part of a series as well. A couple months ago I went on a "third book binge" and finished up several trilogies (Teen Trilogies) but I still had some ...
Both of these books are fantasy, with a similar feel to "Game of Thrones" ... kingdoms waging wars, trying to wrest power. Quintana of Charyn is book 3 in The Lumatere Chronicles. I read the first one (Finnikin of the Rock) quite a while ago, and then read book 2 (Froi of the Exiles) just a month or so ago. This series actually isn't classified as YA, it is quite complex. Very well written. Bitterblue is book 3 in the Graceling series. I read book 1 (Graceling) well over a year ago and didn't remember it well. It really didn't matter for book 2 (Fire) which I read recently, but did return to some of the original characters. I actually think Fire should be book 1 (it IS first chronologically), and wished I'd read Graceling and Bitterblue back to back.
These next three are all book 1 of their series. The middle one is a completed trilogy, the other two are still in progress (with only the first book out at this time). These were all pretty good, not super wonderful, but I liked them fine.
- After The End: After world war 3, a group of survivors is living off the land in Alaska. Or so the kids think ... have you seen "The Village"? It's a bit like that. There really was no end of the world. There was a bit of supernatural stuff that was never explained (yet) and the ending was a total cliffhanger. I do like some semblance of a conclusion!
- Inside Out: This reminded me of "Wool" as it started (taking place underground), and "Across the Universe" (in a spaceship) as it progressed. I never quite connected with the characters, the story and romance seemed a bit forced. I'll probably continue with the series as it is out and available and I guess I'd like to see what happens.
- Cyber Dawn: I have Amazon Prime and a Kindle, so I can access a book from the Kindle Lending Library once a month. This was my pick for September. A boy who lost his leg to cancer is fitted with a high-tech prosthetic (basically present day, but a bit more advanced, similar "enhancements" are common). Turns cloak and dagger. Did seem quite "teen" but is one my boys (reluctant readers) might like.
Anyone else read any of these?

I had a nice productive day yesterday! Ok ... so I never got around to doing my Workout Wednesday blog post, but I sure did get in the steps! Just over 38,000! If I hadn't hit 40K once, and already earned that Fitbit badge, I would have pushed to hit it today. I still had plenty of energy at the end of the day. I didn't even feel like I had worked out all day, I just kept busy!
I'm liking the new school schedule. It's shifted just a bit from last year. I leave with the bigger boys about 15 minutes earlier than that year, and leave with the little boys 15 minutes later. To get in a full 20min session on the elliptical before the first carpool, I need to get up a bit earlier than last year. Up at 6:00, hit the elliptical by 6:20, make sure the boys are up as I finish up, make lunches and we're off. Then I have an hour before the elementary carpool. Enough time for breakfast, lunch prep and usually another 20min session on the elliptical if the boys don't need me.
After the kids are at school, I go to Zumba. I had been hitting one class twice (Mon&Wed), but with the schedule shifts, I think I'll go back to MZL on Wednesday. It's close, and starts a little earlier, so I'm done and ready to get onto other things. It's fun seeing the variety of instructors, styles and steps attending five different Zumba classes during the week.
I'm such a homebody, if I get back home, I usually stay home. So if I have errands, I try to hit them on the way home from Zumba, while I'm already out. Shopping isn't "exercise" but it is walking around. I hit Sears (spending some Fitstudio points) and then did some grocery shopping. Putting the groceries away does involve quite a bit of walking and lifting, and often includes several sets of stairs.
I used to get 100 minutes of elliptical most days ... five 20 minute sessions. I'm afraid after years of doing the same thing, I don't get as big a burn as my machine (or Fitbit) says. Lately I've been limiting my elliptical to an hour, and then trying to add some variety (treadmill, bike). Yesterday I did my final 20minutes elliptical and got in some treadmill time.
I've felt a little guilty spending so much "me" time ... sometimes the house isn't as clean as it could be, or I don't get a nice dinner on the table (but all the different schedules make that really hard too). Today I put on some music while I cleaned up the kitchen, vacuumed, did the dishes, folded laundry, even cleaned a couple toilets. After afternoon pickups, I mowed the lawn. I love the smell of fresh cut grass. Sports practices were starting soon, so I made an early dinner for the kids (chicken and rice), and stuck in a lasagna for the hubs (who wouldn't be home until later).
Time for practice! I dropped #2 off at the high school for basketball practice. Back home to grab #5 for soccer practice at 6:30. #4 came along, as he wanted to play on the school playground and "get some steps in" (his words!) He ended up playing basketball on one of the far courts, so I walked back and forth between my two boys. trying to keep an eye on both of them. All three of us got in quite a few steps during that hour. Dropped the munchkins home. Normally 7:30-8:00 is badminton time with #4 ... unless it's a cloudy day, that's the only time the sun won't shine into our eyes. Unfortunately today I needed to take #3 to his basketball practice (8:00-10:00). I told #4 to recruit Daddy into badminton duty tonight (which he did *Ü*) and it was off to practice and a small parent meeting. At least I was picking up #2 at the same time/location.
I had plenty of steps for the day, but if I laid on the bed to read ... I would fall asleep before the 10:00 pickup (which IS past my bedtime). So a little after 9:00 at night, I went down to my gym and hit the stationary bike, getting my reading and riding in. 40 minutes. 10 miles.
I remember the night I did hit 40K. I'd had a big day then too. I'd come home from a basketball game, one with a track above, so I'd jogged while my son played. It was about 9:00 at night and I was so tired, but I was at around 38000 steps and wanted to earn that 40K Fitbit badge. I went down and hit the elliptical, stopping the moment the numbers turned. Today ... I actually didn't feel tired at all! I didn't even feel like I'd spent the day "exercising" ... I was just active all day. It was nice to get stuff done and feel productive. Well ... other than getting a blog post done. That didn't happen.
As far as eating ... I kept calories in check too! Big win. *Ü*
I must say, I'm loving being back on a schedule. Being a SAHM with kids in school, I am completely spoiled and I know it. I have a few hours of "me" time everyday ... and I love that. I feel like I have the exercise down (although I know I need to shake it up more too), but I would like to do better at keeping the house clean and getting dinners done more regularly.
Which comes first for you ... workouts or housework?

... ah, the WICKED weekend! Weight is up this Monday morning, which isn't surprising at all. I was actually quite good on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday... NOT good for eating or exercise. And with today being a holiday (hubs and #1 are working, but the kids are out of school) it doesn't feel like my usual "Motivated Monday" ... although Zumba IS still on, and I'll be heading out to it shortly.
Three of my five boys had due dates of September 5th. As we got close, we always wondered if I'd be "laboring" on Labor Day. None of them happened to hit on a Monday, but it does make for a birthday week here in our home. Thursday #4 turned eleven. Yesterday, #3 turned fourteen. Next Sunday, #1 turns nineteen. That's a lot of birthday cake temptation!
So no "taking the day off" as far as eating & exercise for me today! I'm not sure if I'll get in my usual big Monday numbers, but I'll do my best. We went out to Texas Roadhouse on Saturday night, and had the big family barbeque last night, so I think today should be fairly normal. I hope I can reverse the scale shift (it took a while last week after my Monday high), get one more birthday behind us, get back on the school schedule (what's with this "holiday" after the kids haven't even been for one week?) and see if I can't drop into those elusive 140s ...
Dang weekends! Linking up with MIMM and the Motivation Monday team.
Time to update for August. It was a pretty good month. I got a new pink Polar, and did ok with exercise. I did have a bit of a slump this month that was a little hard to break out of. Hopefully the return to routine will get me back on track. In August we had the final weeks of summer, trying to get in all our bouncing and bowling. We also hit the park, splash pad and mini-golf course. There was school registration, and then the start of school. Back on schedules, no more sleeping in. Basketball is starting back up as well. Lots of BB Guns, Badminton and Birthdays in August... three different cake temptations and dinners out as we celebrated.
Numbers ... started the month at 153.7, and ended it at 153.8. The high for the month was 156.5 and the low was 151.6. Not great for weight, but at least maintaining and not really gaining. I've got to control the weekends better! Here's my day to day doings ...
0801 (Friday) Pretty Good Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 3000. Fitbit Steps 22488. Total Burn 2811. Exercise burn 1244/1100 (70minElliptical, 45minZumba, 45minTennis). My usual Friday Zumba was a bit earlier, as the instructor had to take off for family duties. It got started a little late, so was only 45 minutes. This Zumba isn't too far from my folks, so I'd planned to head over there afterward. I played some tennis with my dad (no nephew today, so we actually got some games in). Then mom and I went out to lunch. It's hard not to eat too much! Back at home I got in a little more elliptical, but not that much, I am feeling my soccer soreness, although nothing like that first week!
0802 (Saturday) Ok Day. Weight 155.8. Calories in 2100. Fitbit Steps 16284. Total Burn 2511. Exercise burn 700/789 (60minElliptical, Lawn Mow). No Zumba today. Just didn't feel like it, and didn't have a class anyway. Not very motivated. Did get the lawn mowed, and I pulled stuff out of the pantry to put down some contact paper. It does look a lot nicer, but I need more paper to finish up.
0803 (Sunday) Ok Day. Weight 154.4. Calories in 2500. Fitbit Steps 12010. Total Burn 2275. Exercise Burn 300/560 (20minElliptical). Started the day with a quick session on the elliptical, then didn't get back down. Not a planned rest day, but I didn't feel bad about it either. Did walk to/from church as well. My boys were coming back today, so I spent some time prepping. Making sure everything was clean. I made some roll dough and got cinnamon rolls and bread sticks rising. I made chicken soup. They were hungry when they walked in later in the afternoon. Very happy to have them all home. Loads of laundry to do tomorrow (actually, I did get started on some today).
0804 (Monday) Good Day. Weight 153.5. Calories in 2700. Fitbit Steps 29523. Total Burn 3345. Exercise burn 1500/1635 (100minElliptical, 60minZumba, Jump2000). Back to the routine, the summer routine that is. Hubs and #1 were up and off early, so harder for me to sleep in, which isn't a bad thing. Good to get up and started! Got in a couple sessions on the elliptical before heading out to Zumba. #2 wanted to be dropped at the gym as usual, but the usual gym is undergoing renovation, so I dropped him at a different one (accepting his membership while the other is closed) which further, but still on the way to Zumba. I stopped at Kmart on the way home, spending my FitStudio points for the week and stopped to gas up, as the guys had left me with an empty tank (I'd filled up #1's truck before turning the keys back to him!) The munchkins wanted to go to Jump N Bounce, so we did. It was a little more crowded, there were some other people up in the lounge. I didn't know if my pacing would bug them (or if they would just think I was crazy) so I didn't get many steps in and was happy when the kids were done. Papa Murphy Monday ... #1 picked up pizza on his way home. I had wondered if the family might want some home cooking after being on the road for over a week, but I guess not. They didn't object to some homemade oreos though ...late pickup of #2, who of course was out with friends all afternoon/evening. Some crazy lightening going on as I went to pick him up. I was glad my weather worrier had gone to bed already!
0805 (Tuesday) Ok Day. Weight 153.3. Calories in 2500. Fitbit Steps 20320. Total Burn 2787. Exercise burn 1056/1078 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba). Had my early/close Zumba, so #2 got a ride to the rec center today. It looked like rain (it's been raining a lot lately) but I went ahead and walked. Zumba was good, but I goofed on starting my Fitbit timer. I did press the button, but I had forgotten to "stop" it from sleeping, so when I thought I was turning it on, I just turned my "sleep" off. Luckily I can input things manually on the comptuer at home (can't do that with the HRM, there have been times I've forgotten to start it and I'm just out of luck). I'd gotten one elliptical in before Zumba, then did another 10 and a 20 min, but I was totally dragging today. Just felt like crawling in bed and staying there. The kids didn't ask to go anywhere, so we didn't. #1 stopped off and visited my folks and went out to dinner with them. I did have to pick up #2 in the afternoon, which took 45min with the further location and then dropping off his friend (who had given the ride there). And of course he then HAD to hang out with friends ... but no evening pickup required as they were having a sleep over. He said they played basketball, volleyball, soccer and staying up late, he racked up 35,000 steps, a new high for him. He missed out on the scones, pot roast dinner and lemon jello cake we had at home.
0806 (Wednesday) Good Day. Weight 152.5. Calories in 2100. Fitbit Steps 30552. Total Burn 3114. Exercise burn 1450/1410 (80minElliptical, 60minZumba, Jump7000). Hubs didn't go into work as he was leaving with the Varsity scouts (including #2) for their campout ... not really a campout, but river running. I went to Zumba, then grabbed #2 and brought him home for some breakfast and they were off. I got in a little more elliptical and the kids did request going to Jump .... well, #4 didn't want to go but I don't like leaving him home alone and made him come. He did run around some, but spent some time up with me playing his DS and I let him get a churro treat. The other boys had fun playing ball tag with some other kids that were there. Then a birthday party came and it was overrun with little kids so we left. Benefits of having a pass, otherwise you almost feel obligated to stay and make sure you get your monies worth. I did get 7000 steps while waiting, and I finished my book (which finished the series). Not sure if I'm just emotional or if I was into the story and characters, but I was practically in tears as I turned the last page. Mac & cheese was requested for dinner ... I did have some. I'd never make it for myself, but I do like it.
0807 (Thursday) Good Day. Weight 152.6. Calories in 2350. Fitbit Steps 24350. Total Burn 2769. Exercise burn 1050/1064 (60minElliptical, 45minZumba, Jump 8000). Started the day with elliptical, then had to choose between Zumba and soccer. Soccer requires "more" and it had been a while since I'd seen the Thursday instructors, so I chose Zumba. I was a little late, but it hadn't started, in fact, they couldn't get in the church, the key wasn't working. Marian started playing music from her car and we just danced in the parking lot. It was missing a little "oomph" ... If I'd had more energy, I might have bailed at 9:30 and gone to soccer, but as it was, I just didn't care, even when I only got 45 minutes instead of an hour. I hit Kmart after, spending some Fitstudio points. Back at home, #3 had made plans with friends to go to Jump, so we did. He had four friends meet him there. My little guys gave out early, and I actually went ahead and ran them home at one point, then went back to supervise. I was there for almost five hours. I did get in 8000 steps, but still, rather non-productive. But #3 doesn't often initiate like that, so I wanted to support him.
0808 (Friday) Ok Day. Weight 152.2. Calories in 2200. Fitbit Steps 14364. Total Burn 2488. Exercise burn 650/785 (60minElliptical). I slept in, so much so that I didn't get in my morning elliptical. My usual Friday Zumba wasn't happening, as the instructor was actually up by us, at the soccer fields (big tournament, much car/crowd chaos, yesterday and tomorrow too). I planned to hit MZL ... I SHOULD have double, triple checked Facebook, as I had seen that on Wednesday they had switched buildings. I went and ... empty parking lot. I guess I should have got on my phone and checked, I would have found out they had switched to the Kearns building. If I had left immediately, I probably wouldn't have been too late. But ... I didn't care enough. Just feeling BLAH lately. I'd planned on hitting Macey's for some grocery shopping after Zumba, so I just went and did that. Stocked up on fruit snacks as they are on sale and my last stock up is about gone. The boys wanted to go bowling, so we did. I was even going to spring for some fries and chicken tenders, but the line at the snack bar was so long that I didn't. I guess that saved me some calories! I did end up getting in my hour of elliptical, but I really had to push myself.
0809 (Saturday) Ok Day. Weight 153.1. Calories in 1800. Fitbit Steps 13553. Total Burn 2381. Exercise burn 450/673 (30minElliptical, Lawn Mow) There was 7:00 Zumba but I just didn't feel up to it at all, I didn't even try. I think there was 8:30 Zumba too, but I didn't have the energy or desire for it either. I did do my elliptical first thing. I had made cinnamon rolls to rave reviews last weekend and had told the kids I'd make them again, so I did get them going. Mowed the lawn and put more contact paper down in the pantry. Hubs and #2 came home mid-afternoon. #2 of course wanted to go to friend's, so I dropped him off (with a pan of cinnamon rolls) and then hit the grocery store. I had #1 on pickup duty (for #2) as I was super tired and ready for bed early.
0810 (Sunday) Ok Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 2500. Fitbit Steps 16874. Total Burn 2540. Exercise burn 650/829 (60minElliptical, Badminton, Walk to/from Church). Back to making breakfast for the gang, I had a couple weeks off there. Got in some elliptical, then walked to/from church. We played a little badminton and beach volleyball (not played at the beach, but played with a beach ball) and #2 and Daddy joined in while I took a lot of pictures. I made toasted cheese sandwiches for dinner and homemade oreos for dessert.
0811 (Monday) Good Day. Weight 153.9. Calories in 2400. Fitbit Steps 29163. Total Burn 3236. Exercise burn 1400/1524 (80minElliptical, 60minZumba, Jump3000, Badminton). Got in my elliptical, and then Zumba. Felt good to be back at it. #2 had gotten a ride to the rec center, but asked me to pick him (and five buddies up) and transport them to their next basketball location, so I did. The little boys wanted to go to Jump ... actually #4 really did NOT want to go. We didn't end up staying for very long. I got in 3000 steps. I played some badminton with #4. Papa Murphy Monday, pizza for dinner. #1 had also picked up a cinna-wheel ... I ate too much of that! 9:30 pickup of #2, dropping off some basketball paperwork. It was a productive day for me though, I scheduled my doctor's appointment, a DMV appointment for #2 (learner's permit), make reservations for a show on Saturday (season tickets, we've struggled to get in) and got some school registration stuff done.
0812 (Tuesday) Good Day. Weight 153.1. Calories in 2150. Fitbit Steps 25987. Total Burn 3019. Exercise burn 1350/1311 (80minElliptical, 60minZumba, Jump2000, Badminton). #2 wanted to be dropped off at the gym, so I quickly did that before Zumba. Got back home in time to walk. Good class, over 400 on both HRM and Fitbit, although didn't get to 7000 steps. There was a dog that came charging and barking at me. I have actually approched the family, told them how fearful I am of their dogs and asked them to please control them. One of the kids was out and said sorry, but that doesn't stop the dog! My car had given me a warning yesterday about engine coolant, and I knew it was time for an oil change. Not my favorite thing to do, but I took it in. A mom was there with five little kids! They were actually pretty well behaved, but that did immediately fill up the tiny waiting room. #3 had arranged for friends to meet him at Jump again today. We went over and YIKES ... it's only been that crowded one other time. A day care was just leaving (about 40 kids) but another one was just checking in. I was ready to call it quits, but couldn't really as the boy's friends were already there. So it wasn't a pleasant day waiting. My little ones gave out, so I brought them home. #3 ended up going home with one of the other boys, which meant I had to go pick him up. A storm was rolling in, blowing dust and back home I quickly put the badminton net away before it broke. #3 had basketball over at the high school. I picked him up at 9:00, grabbing #2 at the same time (I'd told him I wasn't going to make two trips). He had actually gone with us to Jump, calling it quits early at the gym, but he DID call it quits when he saw the crowds and just walked from the Jump place to his friend's house and had spent the day there.
0813 (Wednesday) Good Day. Weight 151.8. Calories in 2700. Fitbit Steps 28539. Total Burn 3166. Exercise burn 1310, 1466 (80minElliptical, 60minZumba, Park3000). I dropped #2 off at the gym on the way to Zumba, then grabbed him after and we stopped at Kmart and got him some shorts and a belt. A little back-to-school shopping with my Fitstudio points. He picked out a couple cargo shorts ... I haven't seen the kid in anything other than basketball shorts (and church clothes) in forever! He then wanted to go to his friend's house (big surprise), I packed up the other kids and after dropping him off, we checked out a park that opened up this summer. Had a nice big playground, a splash pad, tennis courts and basketball courts. #3 and #4 had an altercation which lead to #3 going off and sulking for the rest of the time. So frustrating! So #4 and #5 (and a friend) got all wet and had fun anyway. #2 had basketball again in the evening. There is a big soccer tournament going on on the fields just outside our neighborhood. I thought the one last week was bad ... this one is even worse! Cars lining the streets, parked illegally. It's imposible to turn left out of the neighborhood, and even turning right is scary with all the traffic and the limited sitelines with the cars lining the sides of the roads. There may be fields enough for games ... but there is NOT parking! A plane crashed onto those fields (as there is the small Airport#2 right there too) on Sunday. Thank goodness it wasn't one of these days where the fields and roads were jam packed! Made spaghetti for dinner, although hubs didn't get home until very late (and I needed to get it in before taking #3 to basketball at 7:00). 9:00 pickups ... better than the 10:00 ones, which will probably start up again in the fall. Food added up quickly, some not good choices (cold cereal for breakfast, some ice cream, some spaghetti and bread) but nothing big and bingy. It just adds up!
0814 (Thursday) Pretty Good Day. Weight 151.6. Calories in 2800. Fitbit Steps 23691. Total Burn 3061. Exercise burn 1320/1362 (90minElliptical, 55minZumba, 45minweights). #2 was sleeping in ... it was odd just leaving to Zumba without him asking for a ride somewhere. I did choose Zumba over soccer again. #5 had been invited to go to the water park with a friend, and I needed to get back to help get him off. Zumba was just so-so. I love one of the instructors, but am not crazy about a couple of the other ones ... that SHOULD push me to go to soccer. I just need to get up the oomph! I did offer to take the other kids somewhere, bowling or something. We talked about mini-golf but I didn't want the little one to miss out. We ended up not going anywhere. I did take #2 to a friend's around 4:00 (made a bunch of muffins and sent them with him, I feel bad as he's often mooching food off these families other days. I try to send stuff to feed him and friends when I can). Got in some elliptical and actually did weights! I wish I could say it felt wonderful to be back at it ... it wasn't bad or anything, but I still just felt like I was going through the motions. It had been pretty windy and sunny all day, so it wasn't until late evening that I suggested to #4 we try a little badminton. I actually didn't bother putting up the net, we just bounced the birdie back and forth (imaginary net). One half of the sky was blue with white fluffy clouds, the other was dark, and soon lightening was streaking the sky. It was still pretty far away, I could see #4 getting anxious. He's my one with the weather phobia. He really tried, but it was heartbreaking to me to see his little face fill with fear at each flash. I said we could go back inside and he practically dropped the racket and ran. He had me hang the blanket over the window in his room, something we do to block out any light. Hubs and #1 had a work activity at the lake (hubs had taken the wave-runners) and they weren't home until late. I had the 9:00 pickup (#3 from basketball, #2 from friends) ... soccer clearing out at that hour, the 7:00 drop-off at the high school is complete car chaos. I actually have to come home a different way or get stuck in soccer traffic, turning my 10-minute trip into a 45-minute one!
0815 (Friday) Pretty Good Day. Weight 152.8. Calories in 2100. Fitbit Steps 20535. Total Burn 2806. Exercise burn 1100/1100 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba). Instead of hitting the gym today, #2 was going golfing with his buddies. I dropped him at a friend's house at 8:00. I thought about hitting double Zumba today, but I didn't quite get back and out the door in time for the 8:30 class. I did a session on the elliptical and then went to my 10:00 class across town. After getting back from Zumba, the kids said they wanted to go mini-golfing. Well, #5 did NOT want to. After being gone all day yesterday, he was wanting to just stay home. It was ok, as #1 was home from work to watch him. I took #3 and #4 and their friend ... it was actually the same course that #2 had gone to earlier in the day (they had both regular and mini available). Warm sunny day, I wore a tank and got a little sun on my shoulders. In the evening, we went to a wedding reception. It was in Lindon, which is a 30-40min drive on the freeway. Even as a passenger, I'm not good on freeways. Makes me anxious. The wedding reception was for people hubs and #1 knew (we brought #1 with us) ... definitely pushing me out of my comfort zone for the evening.
0816 (Saturday) Bad Day. Weight 153.3. Calories in 2750. Fitbit Steps 14503. Total Burn 2386. Exercise burn 400/677 (20minElliptical). I was tentatively planning on hitting Zumba. My motivation for Saturdays hasn't been great, even for the later one (8:30) when I can sleep in a little. I did get up and was pretty much out the door when #4 asked me to play badminton with him. Sometimes you do just need to stop and play badminton. I didn't make it to Zumba. After playing, I went down and hit the elliptical for 20, but that was my only exercise for the day. I did stay busy and active though. Cleaned the kitchen, including vacuuming and mopping. Mowed the lawn, and then played ping pong with #4 (badminton has increased his interest and skill with other racquet sports *Ü*). I also had him do a couple Zumba songs with me. He's been interested in "Just Dance" lately, and is always impressed with my steps after I return from class. I'd been debating taking him and having him try it, but I could see he was getting easily stressed out about it. I made cookies too; cookie press ones, which are dangerous ... it's easy to eat a lot of them! In the early evening, hubs and I headed out to a local theater for a parody play "Calamity Jane". It's dinner theater, and we ordered some cheesy bread. Yummy, but not low calorie stuff. #4 got his highest step day to date ... 20K, he beat me!
0817 (Sunday) Bad Day. Weight 155.5. Calories in 2600. Fitbit Steps 10,448. Total Burn 2207. Exercise burn 350/486 (20minElliptical). Got up and hit the elliptical first thing. We were about out of milk and my car needed gas, so I did take care of that. Made breakfast ... I actually didn't indulge in a full belgian waffle, but I must admit I snuck some cookie press cookies from the freezer. Church, I walked to and from. The youngest and oldest walked with me ... it was warm and just a few feet from the house my oldest said "I've made a huge mistake" ala Arrested Development. It was fun to chat with him on the walk though. I always have good talks with my boys on these, even though they are short. It was the two little ones for the walk home, even though #4 wasn't really working on steps today after his big day yesterday. He told me in the morning "Sunday is a day of rest, I'm taking a rest day" *Ü* I did challenge him to a little badminton in the evening though, after the sun went down. I made Hawaiian Haystacks for dinner, and #1 made gingersnap dough for dessert. He packed up half the dough and headed out to his friend's house for the evening. I turned the rest of the dough into cookies ... and did partake. Mmmmm cookies! The cookie press cookies are gone!
0818 (Monday) Good Day. Weight 156.5. Calories in 2500. Fitbit Steps 26225. Total Burn 3160. Exercise burn 1350/1433 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba, 30minBike). Whoa, weight is up. Not really surprising. #2 had asked me last night if I would take his friends to the golf course in the morning ... ok. The plan had been 8:00, but after I'd gone to bed he sent a text saying they were switching it to later, I'd drop them on my way to Zumba (it was out that way, just a slight detour). That was well and good, probably saved me time over a special trip out, but I was a little worried about the boys being late, making me late. I don't like not getting in my full Zumba hour. We did make it off ... squished eight of his friends into our suburban (no, it doesn't hold that many kids!) I dropped them and made it to Zumba (luckily it started late). T was doing a new song from Heather's class and had me come up and help lead it. My heart rate was high during that song. Not sure if it was because it was a nice energetic one, one that I knew ... or nerves! Anyway, good numbers today. Heart rate was up, even though I felt about the same as some of my other classes where I haven't been able to get it up. I figured the kids would want to do something ... bowling, jump or the park, but they seemed content to just hang around the house. I'd ordered "Just Dance 3" for #4 (he'd played it at his friend's house) ... it's his birthday at the end of the month, but I gave it to him early, as he has the extra time now. I actually got in some time on the stationary bike, it's been a while! When I get reading in elsewhere (waiting at Jiffy Lube, or Jump or the Park) I don't get to the bike, and I have seemed to have something almost everyday lately. It was good to get back at it. Papa Murphy Monday. #1 brought home pizza and cheesy bread. Mmmm, cheesy bread. I was a little sad that in making the cookie press cookies on Saturday I had forgotten to use the snowflake shape I'd received for Christmas. I know it isn't really the season, but I thought "snow in summer" would have been fun. As Hubs and the boys seemed sad the cookies were gone already, I made up another batch, all snowflakes this time, which made it go quicker and easier than trying to color the dough and switch out shapes and such. Daddy and the two little boys did some bb gun shooting out back. They ran out of targets (cans of soda). I thought I had cleared out all the old soda last time they had shooting practice, but when I looked again I found some more cases (quite old at this point). A can of V-8 ended up out there two, and when it was shot ... it looked like blood all over! Crime scene! When they were done shooting, it was still barely light enough to get a little badminton in. Then I had to go pick up #2 ... because obviously he had not come home after golf, but stayed out with friends all day. He was just under 30K for the day. I was a close second!
0819 (Tuesday) Good Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 2000. Fitbit Steps 30138. Total Burn 3178. Exercise burn 1417/1467 (80minElliptical, 60minZumba). I usually walk to Tuesday Zumba, but it was raining, and I had to hurry to an appointment right after, so I drove. Felt good, but the heart rate wasn't very up today. Off to the doctor, my annual physical. As my anxiety issues are seeming to get worse with age, my mother had really encouraged me to talk to the doctor about them. So we are going to try a medication to see if it helps. Back at home, we packed up and hit JUMP. We even had #2 with us! I got in 5000 steps while I waited. Our pass goes until the first week of September, I wonder if we'll make it back in. Badminton with #4. Chicken Alfredo for dinner, then dropped #3 off at basketball. Pretty productive day ... I even scrubbed a toilet!
0820 (Wednesday) Good Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 2000. Fitbit Steps 23184. Total Burn 3000. Exercise burn 1150/1289 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba, Treadmill Mile). Not a great night. A thunder storm woke my weather worrier around 4:00 in the morning. I was able to comfort him and get him back to sleep, but I couldn't fall back asleep. Lots of storms lately! Dropped #2 off at the rec center on the way to Zumba. Lots of little kids running around today, I was a little afraid that one of them was going to bump into me (or vice versa) and a little bit later it happened (although not to me, to one of the other ladies). It put a damper on the day a bit. It's hard, I know these free church classes are great for moms with little kids (who can't afford a gym membership) and yet the kids can't just be allowed to run either. Stopped at Kmart on the way home to spend my Fitstudio points. Got some cute camis on clearance. I suppose we should have gotten out to do something fun on these last days of summer, but the kids seemed content at home. I did get some badminton in with #4. Basketball clinic at the high school again. More rain ... Poor #4 was really having a tough time. I had to sequester him downstairs in a room with the window covered, put on a show, give him his video game and noise cancelling headphones. Scary storms! There was a rainbow after though!
0821 (Thursday) Good Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 2250. Fitbit Steps 25009. Total Burn 3185. Exercise burn 1100/1474 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba). Busy day today! Dropped #2 off at the rec center then went to Zumba. It was good today ...a couple of the instructors that I have a harder time following weren't there, the instructors that I'm more familiar with were. I asked the kids if they wanted to go bowling, as our free passes end with August. We did and it was fun. I splurged and bought some food too. We stopped at the rec center on the way home to grab #2. Then he and I were off to the DMV to get his learner's permit. He had already taken and passed the test, so it was just filling out the paperwork and paying the fee. I got in some badminton with #4 a couple times during the day, and some ping pong too. In the evening, I took #3 to back to school night. We walked around and found his locker and classes. Then I dropped him at the high school for the last night of the basketball clinic. Tryouts are next week.
0822 (Friday) Good Day. Weight 153.7. Calories in 2500. Fitbit Steps 23487. Total Burn 3026. Exercise burn 1000/1316 (30minElliptical, 60minZumbaX2). Double Zumba today. I dropped #2 and his friend off at the high school for sophomore orientation and then headed to 8:30 Zumba. I won't be able to hit this class again with school starting up. I snuck out a bit early so I could make it to Heather's class across town at 10:00. My heart rate wasn't too impressive at either class. I stopped at the rec center to sign up the little one for soccer, then grabbed some groceries. I got a text #2 to come pick him up, which I wasn't expecting, he had indicated he was going to hang with friends after school (half day) but I guess that didn't work out, so I went and grabbed him. I started some cinnamon rolls. #2 was out with friends later in the day and was going to spend the night, so I had planned on taking a big pan of fresh rolls to feed his friends. They were at the park, but it started to rain, so they ended up at one of the houses. I dropped the rolls by (much to the chagrin of #1, who doesn't like to share). At least with #2 sleeping over, there was no late night pickup. I was in bed by 9:30.
0823 (Saturday) OK Day. Calories in 2050. Fitbit Steps 15357. Total Burn 2461. Exercise burn 400/751 (30minElliptical, Lawn Mow). About 2:00 in the morning, thunder and lightening woke me up. I'm not scared of storms myself, but with #4's worries, I was anxious, wondering if it would wake him up too. I could not get back to sleep. Around 4:00 there was a huge boom and that did wake him. I was able to comfort him and he fell back asleep. Thunder and lightening continued ... long night! I think I finally fell asleep around 5:30 (checking my Fitbit sleep readings). The hubs and I got up and hit SamsClub, as we needed some stuff for a barbeque tomorrow. Did some cleaning, mowed the lawn, played some ping pong with #4. Hubs got the kids weeding out back. Hubs and #4 did some shopping and came home with chick-fil-a. If I don't put it into MFP immediately, it is so easy to forget! #2 went to the Apple Store to get a glass covering off his iphone, and they grabbed some Popeyes on the way home. #2, Mr. Social wanted to go hang out with friends again (even though he had been with them all night and hadn't come home until 1:30 today!) TOM hit this morning.
0824 (Sunday) Bad Day. Calories in 2600. Fitbit Steps 12507. Total Burn 2410. Exercise burn 400/699 (20minElliptical). Up and hit the elliptical, but that was the only "exercise" for the day. Made breakfast. Last week I was pretty good, not eating a whole waffle ... but I ate one today. Walked to/from church, then did some cleaning/vacuuming in prep for the parents coming over. Gray made his delicious bbq and we played games. Grandpa played some of the boys in ping pong, and we got some badminton in. Also Rummikub and Apples to Apples. We sang to Cooper and had the white cake from Sam's Club.
0825 (Monday) Good Day. Calories in 2000. Fitbit Steps 25387. Total Burn 3182. Exercise burn 1100/1461 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba). #2 was back to school today, so I actually had to set the alarm and get up early. We left here around 7:00, which is early, we won't do that every day. The younger boys start tomorrow, so they were still home today. I hit my Zumba and then was willing to hit Jump or bowling, but they didn't seem inclined. Just an "at home" day. I picked up #2 after school, but took him back at 6:00 for his basketball clinic. Then it was back to school night for the two little ones. Poor #4 is having extreme anxiety about starting up again. He broke down into tears at the school but managed to pull himself together. I hope once he gets the first day behind him it will get better. At least the storms originally forecast for tomorrow have shifted, so he shouldn't have to battle his weather phobia at the same time. We had Papa Murphy pizza for dinner, with a cinna wheel for dessert. I also made brownies, as I package up the left-overs for the lunch treats.
0826 (Tuesday) Good Day. Calories in 2000. Fitbit Steps 24643. Total Burn 3058. Exercise burn 1200/1339 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba, 30minBike). I've really been struggling with sleep lately. Not sure if it's a possible side-effect of the new medication, or just coincidental timing. I'll keep an eye on it. I felt like I was awake for several hours in the night. The boys were up early without much urging. #3 needs to be ready early, as I have to take him at the same time, even though it gets him to school quite early. The high school and middle school are close together, so I just do the drop offs together. We're leaving about 15minutes earlier than last year, as the high school starts sooner. The elementary is starting later, so I have almost a full hour in-between the two car trips. I dropped off the little ones, got back home and grabbed my HRM and shoes and walked to the church for Zumba. Feeling a little burned out, perhaps the lack of sleep? Fitbit numbers were the usual but HRM was a little low (315). I was dragging so much today, that I actually laid down for a nap. Not sure if it helped or not. Just picked up middle school for the first pickup, as #2 was staying after for a weight training clinic. Then off to the elementary for the little ones. Poor #4 looked so sad, already stressing about how hard school is, and worrying about an assignment (optional one) due in April! Not sure what to do about his anxiety. The thunderstorms originally forecast for the morning did end up hitting, but at least I feel like it's better for him to handle them in the safety and comfort of home, rather than school. There was some thunder and lightening than had him shaken. Hubs was out late with a work dinner ... I went and picked up #2 around 9:00, Mr. Social, enjoying "Taco Tuesday" with his friends.
0827 (Wednesday) Good Day. Calories in 1700. Fitbit Steps 25369. Total Burn 3185. Exercise Burn 1300/1470 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba, 30minTreadmillWalk, 30minWeights). #4 was struggling with school and storms, in tears as I dropped him off. I figured perhaps I should stick close to home. I hit MZL zumba rather than my usual one in Draper. It was a good class though, I enjoyed it. I had a pretty productive day with workouts, and kept calories in check!
0828 (Thursday) OK Day. Calories in 3000. Fitbit Steps 28002. Total Burn 3056. Exercise Burn 1309, 1348 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba, 38minBike, 20minTreadmillWalk). Birthday for #4. Sent him to school with a treat to give his class. Some presents before and after school. Good day with workouts, but wasn't able to keep the food in check. I did ok for most of the day, but #4 chose Chick-Fil-A for his birthday dinner. I wasn't going to order anything, but hubs got me some nuggets and the birthday boy shared his shake. It adds up quick. I didn't even have the cake I wanted. I tried to pick up our usual oreo ice cream cake earlier but it wasn't in stock at the store. Had to settle for a big "cookie" cake ... which wasn't that great, but I still ate more than I should have. So good day in that I did meet my exercise goals, but bad day in that I consumed as many calories as I burned. #3 had his final "tryouts" for basketball (until 10:00) ... hubs was still awake so did the pick up for me as I did a final late workout.
0829 (Friday) Good Day. Calories in 2050. Fitbit Steps 25184. Total Burn 3098. Exercise Burn 1150, 1386 (60minElliptical, 60minZumba). First Friday on the school schedule. High school and middle school have late start, although not the same time, so it takes me two separate trips. Elementary starts at the same time, but has early out. Challenging but doable. Went straight to Zumba after dropping off #3 and it was a good class, I was surprised my HRM weren't a bit higher. Got in some additional elliptical and mowed the front lawn. Played a little badminton with #4 once the sun wasn't in our eyes. I was tired, but he wasn't to keep going until he got a certain number of steps. #2 actually requested pickup around 7:30 (usually he begs to stay out late) but it was nice to have an evening at home. I actually kept calories in check today.
0830 (Saturday) Bad Day. Calories in 3250. Fitbit Steps 11166. Total Burn 2246. Exercise Burn 603/540 (60minElliptical). Had a family activity today (baptism of my niece), so it was about an hour drive, and hour plus sitting for the service, then visiting at the house after, then home. I hadn't eaten before, so I was hungry. I had a couple slices of meat, grapes and baby carrots and I did snag a few oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I'd made brownies to bring last night. After the drive home, I was exhausted for some reason. Hubs too. We both got in a nap. It's #3's birthday tomorrow, so we had a family dinner to Texas Roadhouse. It was a bit of a wait, but I introduced #4 to a "Stack the States" app that I'd downloaded when he started to panic about learning them. All the boys were soon into it, and tossing out capital cities and states. It was a really fun night. Ate too much of course. Back at home, I did get in a little more elliptical to make sure I hit my 10K to fulfill my Pact (not sure if I would have otherwise). Hubs went and got "Divergent" and we watched that (I've read the entire trilogy). I quite liked it. We usually have popcorn when we watch a movie, but we were both too full.
0831 (Sunday) Bad Day. Calories in 3000. Fitbit Steps 8112. Total Burn 2010. Exercise burn 300/285 (20minElliptical). Birthday for #3 ... whereas #4 had seemed pretty pleased with his presents (and he had told me some stuff he wanted) I gathered #3 wasn't super impressed. Kids are tough to please sometimes. Sunday Circles for breakfast. I walked to/from church. Hubs helped out in #5's class, and got to witness the misbehavior of a couple of kids I'm always telling him about (MY kids are perfect of course!) After church we went out to my BIL's house for a family celebration with Hubs side of the family. Smoked brisket, mashed taters, rolls (which had fallen, I still ate a few) and then chocolate cake for the birthday boys. Not a lot of steps today, #4 managed to beat me (he got 11K).
