No Power? No Problem!

On Tuesday, I was twiddling about at home when ...voomp. The power went out. Now what? What could I possibly do without electricity?

Happily, my mornings are my main exercise time. I'd already gotten in some elliptical and my Zumba class. I had planned on another session of something during the day though.

The treadmill was out, as it needs power to run. The my elliptical doesn't plug in, but I watch TV while on it  ... that requires power. The stationary bike doesn't require power, AND I read my book on it (on my ipad, which luckily was fully charged and ready to go).  I got my biking in. I DID miss my fan blowing me with cool air during my workout. The fan requires electricity.

As I finished up my fitness ... now what? I can't work on the computer. Can't vacuum. I was able to slap on my headphones and listen to my audiobook while I put away the clean dishes, loaded the dishwasher, and folded some laundry that had finished before the power went out.

Luckily the power came back on a few hours later, before the kids got home from school. They always struggle a bit ... "what can we do now?"  with no TV or video games. Well, you can play outside (it was a nice day yesterday), board games, read a book, and some video games are still a possibility if they had been charged up.

A friend of mine recently posted she couldn't get her wifi to work, so she didn't get to watch a show during her bike session. I recommended always having a book (audio or otherwise) as a backup. This applied to Hubby as well, when he couldn't connect to the wifi at the gym, and it left him frustrated.

We become so reliant on our technology, often our fitness relies on watching a program directing our moves (and motivating us), powering equipment, lighting the room, cooling us down, or simply entertaining us while we work out. I know this applies to indoor exercisers more than those taking advantage of the great outdoors. Just give it a thought BEFORE the power goes out, or the wireless goes wonky ... do you have a backup plan? Don't let it derail your day! *Ü*

Funny (but true) quote shared by a friend recently ...

How put out are you when the power goes out?

Meniere's and other Medical Mishaps this March

Last Monday, I was pretty motivated. I got up early and got started on the day. An hour of elliptical, Zumba and weights. I was planning on hitting the bike in the evening, when I got a call from Hubs. Just a quick call. He was having a Meniere's attack. It had come on in a single moment. He'd been stopped at a light, after glancing down he looked up and the world was spinning. He managed to pull over into an empty church parking lot ...

Have you heard of Meniere's Disease? Unless it affects someone close to you, it's not likely you have. It isn't one that makes the news. Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes in which you feel as if you're spinning (vertigo), and you have fluctuating hearing loss with a progressive, ultimately permanent loss of hearing, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear. For Hubs, the hearing loss and tinnitus have been constant for years now. It's just something he's learned to deal with day to day. The attacks on the other hand ... severe vertigo can cause loss of balance, nausea, sweating and vomiting. Usually he can feel an attack coming on, it time to get horizontal. A fan is helpful, and NO movement. He needs to fix is eyes on a single spot in an attempt to stop the spinning. Usually we just have to wait it out (several hours) and then there is definitely a drag for hours, even a day after the spinning stops.

Hubs has gone months, even years without an attack ... then had several close together. Caffeine, salt, stress are all thought to be possible triggers, but we haven't had much luck with lifestyle changes. If you have been following my Day to Day Doings I've mentioned that Hubs has recently (the last month or two) been improving his eating and exercise habits ... which makes it especially discouraging to have an attack happen now, when he has been being good!

I still remember his worst attack, just a day or two before we had baby #3. I was glad it happened before ... not during or in the days after (when he was helping out with the other boys). I remember having to leave a movie theater, as the jittery camera work was starting to set him off. We once had to cancel a weekend getwaway as an attack took over. Overall though, we've been pretty lucky. As bad as it is at times, there are others who have it worse (I joined a Meniere's Group on Facebook, and oh the stories there!).

Last Monday ... we had the evening free at least, as Hubs sat for four hours in his truck until the attack passed. He was fairly close to home, I did drive out to check on him, bring him some water ... but there's not much else I can do but wait it out with him. Needless to say, I didn't get my session on the bike in, and poor Hubs felt totally gypped of his evening. He did recover enough to work the next day, and do a couple derbies that week, and jog five miles on Saturday. Crossing fingers that the next attack is far, far away!

This March has had a few extra medical issues ... #3 has been in his cast this entire month, he'll be getting it off tomorrow unless there are complications. I had my followup with my doctor this month as well. I'd mentioned in one of my earlier Friday recaps that while going in for a routine IUD removal ... the doctor couldn't find it. There was a bit of stress, I've heard of them "migrating" to other locations in the body, requiring surgery, but we were lucky again, as an ultrasound showed it was still in place and with it as a guide it was able to be located and removed.

I'm dealing with insurance issues as well ... back in November I took #2 in for a basic sports physical. I see these advertised many locations for $20. We do have insurance, and I went to one on the list, only now, months later, receiving notification that it wasn't covered, and the bill was almost $200! So much fun! Still working on figuring that out.

I'm ready for March, and the medical issues therein, to be done.
Hoping for an awesome April!

Weekly Weigh-In #139

This was just a strange week ... didn't fit into the usual patterns. Friday started great, as I did an hour of Zumba on my own! It's hard to get the motivation without a gym of people. But then ... only 40min elliptical. There was a 5k on Saturday that I'd been considering ... but I wimped out and didn't go, but I loved that my kids did it! It inspired me to do a treadmill 5k on Sunday myself. Monday started good ... ended bad. While a Meniers attack (if you don't know that that is, I'll talk a bit about it in an upcoming post) certainly affects Hubby more, it does really impact me as well. Dragging on Tuesday, and then I'll admit I looked at the week, Spring Break, Easter festivities and said  "I'm just gonna let this week go" ...

NUMBERS: Up .7 for the official weekly weigh-in, average went down -.97 (163.07). Average intake was 2579 (how can she eat so much you ask? Empty calories!) Average daily burn was 2639. Crunching the numbers, that equaled an overage of 1157 for the week.   FITNESS: Step average was 19150, 723 active minutes, 105 min spent on strength training, and 69.45 miles. I got in my Zumba five days, got in my hour of elliptical most days, had some treadmill time this week, but NO bike. FOOD: Bad, bad, bad. Easter candy, ice cream ... I even bought donuts on Thursday. Bad! FAMILY: The 5k. Hubs had two derbies. Spring Break. Here's a quick look at the day to day ...

  • Friday (0318):  Slept in, but did Zumba on my own today! Only 40min elliptical. Indulged in some pizza, but also sugary empty calories.
  • Saturday (0319): Hubs and two of the boys ran a 5k. I should have, I wimped out. Just 40min on the elliptical. Overate on empty calories, and then out to dinner with Hubs.
  • Sunday (0320): Lazy morning, but decided to get moving in the afternoon. Did a treadmill 5k, and 30min on the bike. Unfortunately still over on calories (Sunday breakfast and too many treats).
  • Monday (0321): Up early. Hour of elliptical, Zumba and WEIGHTS. A little Easter shopping too. Hubs had a Meniers attack in the evening which was a downer for the day.
  • Tuesday (0322): Not up early, Hubs and #2 slept in as well. Got in an hour of elliptical and Zumba, but that was all. TV repairman came. Uber over on eating!
  • Wednesday (0323): Up early again. Hour of elliptical and Zumba, plus some errands. Got in WEIGHTS again. Early out at the elementary. Hubs and #3 had a derby in the evening.
  • Thursday (0324): Spring break for the kids, so some sleeping in, then off to Zumba. Still got in my hour of elliptical during the day. Hubs and #3 had another derby in the evening.
I don't really have any new pictures to share ... I took some, but already featured them in my recent posts (5k photos, and the boys in their new jackets), but here's a couple of the kids trying out Snapchat's faceswap app ... much laughter as these pictures were taken!

Cold Weather Wear

Spring has sprung according to the almanac, but we had quite the snow storm yesterday! Still plenty of chilly weather. Reflecting on this past winter, I realized that I'd added several new jackets to my wardrobe. Most all of the thin, fitness variety. Ones I take off at Zumba, and then tie around my waist. That's almost as important as it's regular use, right?

I'm always a little late with new fashion trends. The pullovers with the thumb-holes have been around for a while, but I only invested in them this year. I do like the look, and it does keep the sleeves in place, but it makes washing hands or looking at my Fitbit ChargeHR (on my wrist) a bit of a pain.

Do you like the sleeves with thumb-holes?
Do you prefer pullover or zip-up?
Do you want a jacket with or without a hoodie?

I'm never outside for long periods of time (no skiing or sledding, just the occasional snow shoveling duty, which warms you up pretty fast anyway) so I pretty much got away with just jackets this whole winter. I'm not sure if I ever put on a coat. The kids are worse than me! Just jackets! I was reading a newspaper article about schools trying to gather donations of coats, boots, hats and gloves for the poor kids that came to school without them. MY children have them ... they refuse to wear them! Then did finally consent to gloves during the coldest days.

I bought this DARLING hat for #4. I mean it matches his Terra Linda Tigers school jacket perfectly and it would keep his ears warm. Why won't he wear it? Why?  (I figured this would be hit or miss, although I did see plenty of kids wearing this type of animal hat at his school). I bought a couple bear ones too (the high school mascot is the Grizzly) but the bigger boys also turned their noses up at them.

I picked up these jackets recently for quite the steal (less than $6 each!). I don't know what the CB stands for exactly ... but it's the initials of both my little boys! They like them. The boys and I ... no coats, but several cute jackets!

#5 has at least been wearing long pants during the winter months. He likes joggers. He pretty much lives in compression shirts up top.  #4 ... he participated in a school Shakespeare play a while back. During the play, they had to wear tights or leggings as part of their costume. Thus were leggings discovered. Boys wear them quite a bit in basketball (an extra little layer of protection for the skin when they go down) ... but they can also be popular for everyday. My 12-year old wears them EVERY DAY now, making it possible to continue to wear his shorts all winter. Even as there have been warmer days, he's a little unsure about going back to "just shorts" ... he says he feels a bit naked.  We'll see what happens when it really warms up! Here's hoping!

What are your cold weather clothing trends?

My Little Man Ran (First 5k)

For the past several months, my 12-year old has been a step-crazy kid! Often with weeks averaging daily steps of 30,000 or more. When it's too cold to play outside, he started jogging on the treadmill to up his step count. He mentioned casually to me "I set it at 6 (6mph), so that's one mile in 10 minutes, and three miles in 30 minutes." Ummm ... I don't think I could do that (admittedly, I'm a wimp when it comes to running)! I haven't hit the treadmill lately, but back when I did, I was more at the 12-minute mile range. 5mph. I'm not even sure how long I could keep that up at this point, three miles would be pushing it!

I mentioned the statement to Hubs, and he looked up a local 5k this past weekend.  We wondered if running in a race might appeal (this is my anxiety child, who has dropped out of team sports because they are too stressful and competitive.) #4 seemed willing to give it a try, and #3 (the 15-year old) said he would too (even with a cast on his arm/broken wrist). If #5 (10 years old) had wanted to run too, I would have done it myself, but the little guy wanted to save his energy for his basketball game later in the day. So off Daddy and the two boys went. Maga met them at the race!

Ready to Race!

Daddy's original plan had been to start closer to the back of the pack, so the boys could pass some people and get that rush. The boys however didn't like the "back" idea and wound their way to the front. They were off and Hubs couldn't quite catch up! We were both a little afraid the boys might push too hard, and then need to stop, but they ran the whole thing. #4 came in just under 24 minutes (2nd in his age group, 19th overall) with #3 right behind him.

I think it was an excellent experience for both boys. They had been with us years ago when we did our Family 5k, but #4 was in a stroller then, and #3 had been on a scooter. This was the first time running a 5k for both of them. I don't think it will be their last though ...

WWI #138 - BAD Weekend, Okay Week

This last week ... it was a very bad weekend, but a decent week thereafter. For exercise anyway ... eating? Arrrggg! NUMBERS: Down .6 from last weigh-in (which is still up from the weeks before) but the average increased 1.51 to 164.04. Average Intake was a whopping 2693. Average Burn only 2580. So no deficit, over by 2899 for the week. FOOD: I was AWFUL over the weekend, and high all the other days. I just eat and eat! FITNESS: Bad Fri/Sat/Sun but good all the weekdays, getting in my hour of elliptical, Zumba, and bike plus two sessions of weights! FAMILY: Many movies over the weekend, a church activity and a school activity in the evenings. Here's a quick look at the past week:
  • Friday (0311): Not sure what was wrong with me today, I was feeling OFF. Laid down much of the day. The elementary was out of school, and Hubs took the day off. Only 10minElliptical.  Eating was UBER over. We went out to dinner at Braza Grill with Hubs and my family.
  • Saturday (0312): Feeling a bit better than yesterday. 30min on the elliptical. Again, uber over on eating (ice cream and cookies) ... and then popcorn and a movie(DVD) with Hubs.
  • Sunday (0313): Daylight Savings. Spring Forward. Just 10minElliptical, but at least I kept eating under control. Still over burn, as it wasn't an active day. Hubs made us a yummy steak dinner.
  • Monday (0314): Back at it! Got up early even with the time change. An hour of elliptical, Zumba, bike and WEIGHTS. Pretty good day.
  • Tuesday (0315): An hour of elliptical, Zumba and bike. Pinewood derby in the evening for #5.
  • Wednesday (0316): Got in early elliptical (80min total for the day), Zumba, bike and WEIGHTS again! Also some shopping steps. Almost 30k day. Even with a great burn, eating was high.
  • Thursday (0317): An hour of elliptical, Zumba and bike. Sophomore orientation over at the high school for #3.
Not a lot of pictures taken this week ...
here's a video of the highlights from the Pinewood Derby though!
(Hubs running it, #5 competing in it)

Throwback Thursday - Grandparent's Lunch

One of the traditions at the elementary here, is an "Invite Your Grandparents to Lunch" day. It's always the second week of March. This year, it was one week ago and as the next few days passed, I kept seeing the previous years pictures popping up in my Facebook memories. I thought I'd create a comparison post to look at the pictures from the past five years!

The picture above (my parents) and below (my MIL) with the three youngest boys.

It was 2012, and the boys were in 5th, 2rd and kindergarten (just a half day, so it was a treat for him to come eat lunch at the school too!) It was a luau theme. One of the most memorable things about it for me (as I go and take pictures and visit with the grandparents as well) was that #4, could hardly wait to get out to recess and didn't really want to stop and take the pictures. Now I know for most kids, that wouldn't be considered unusual, but for THIS kid ... we'd been struggling with a weather phobia and extreme anxiety. He rarely went to recess at all for months because he was too scared to go outside. I remember feeling so happy as he skipped off to play.

In 2013 ... the school did a circus theme. They had a cute photo booth with funny props; hats, wigs, glasses, etc. But ... the line for pictures was quite long, and once again, my boys were anxious to hit the playground. They didn't want to wait around for the official photos, so I just snapped this one in front of one of the other displays.

The boys were in 1st, 3rd and 6th grade this year. My MIL couldn't make it out, but my parents came. My boys generally bring a cold lunch from home. I prepped a "lunch" for my folks too. A note is sent home prior to the event, and grandparents are more than welcome to purchase a school lunch. Sometimes the visitors would grab something special on the way and bring it (a Little Ceasars lunch or McDonalds).

The different grades have various lunch times, but the kids would be excused from classes to join siblings and grandparents to lunch together.

The following year, after much contemplation and consideration ... we switched elementary schools. The year-round schedule was difficult on #4 (every time we'd stop and start it would be like the beginning of school again) and I sure like a routine. With the older boys on a traditional schedule, we wanted all the kids with a full summer for family activities.

In 2014 ...
the two youngest were in the 2nd and 4th grades.

I was a little surprised when March rolled around and there is was ... Invite Your Grandparents to Lunch day!  I thought it was just something our old school did. I guess not. My parents were planning on coming, but then had a medical situation pop up with my dad. Luckily, Maga (my MIL) was able to to get off work and come down. No theme or props this year, but of course I still get pictures!

#4 proudly wearing his new school t-shirt!

In 2015 the boys were in 5th and 3rd grade. My parents made it out this year.  The boy's lunches overlapped, so I didn't worry about checking one out to join the lunch party ... but then it was just taking TOO long, especially standing in line, as #5 was taking hot lunch. #4 was anxious to hit the playground. Too anxious to wait around for his brother and a group picture. Individual pictures with the grandparents it was.  Note our cute basketball lunchbox *Ü*

... and this year! Just last week, March 10, 2016.  The boy's lunches were very far apart this year. #5 (4th grade) had lunch starting at 11:10, and #4 (6th grade) didn't have lunch until 12:40.  Knowing there was NO WAY #5 would miss any of his lunch recess to eat with his brother, I told the grandparents the earlier time. #4 was excused from his class, and then got to go to recess after we ate, giving him an extra long time on the playground! Even with that, he ate quickly as was ready to get out and play (and get steps).  My MIL was sad she missed it, but she was out of state with other grandkids.

Take a look at the change in #4 from last year to this year! He's always had a round face, and been a bit more stocky than his brothers. He'd gotten a little heavy. I was having to purchase pants in the "husky" size and his shirts were about the same size I'd buy for his brother who was three years older. I'll have to do a complete post on #4's transformation. Through eating and exercise, all on his own, he lost almost 20 pounds and has been holding steady for a while now. I know that kids do change a lot at this age, and he has gained some height as well, helping with the slimming out, but still quite the change for a 12-year old kid!

Next year ... I'll only have ONE in elementary school!

TV Troubles - March Movies

Does your television turn on when you push the power button? Yes? Ours doesn't. It started happening several months ago. If the TV in the family room was turned off, we couldn't turn it back on. At least not easily. If I unlugged it for a bit, and tried again (sometimes again and again) I'd eventually get it to turn back on. So ... we never turned the television off. I mean, we didn't leave on a channel blaring sound and picture; we'd change the source to our Roku box, with a default "clock" screen saver.

But even if you remember to not accidentally push the "off" button (which happened), there were times the power would go out, and eventually, the TV just started turning itself off. I did a Google search and did find that "Samsung/TV won't turn on" did have several hits, a problem with a part that could be repaired. Often under warranty from the TV, or we had purchased a warranty from Best Buy (this not being our first time with TV troubles).

Having the television not working actually wasn't as big a deal as I would have thought. I personally don't ever watch on the family room TV (my gym TV now, THAT would be a different story!). Hubs doesn't either. It's just the kids. But they didn't even complain much. We do have a couple other televisions, but the family room is the only one connected to the Comcast box, the only one you can watch "live" programming on (the others are limited to Netflix, Amazon, PlayOn and other apps). So ... Jazz games, and I'm really glad the television was working last week when #2 and the high school basketball team was playing in the state finals (broadcast on a local kjzz channel).

We had a repairman from BestBuy come check it out on Saturday. He's ordering a part and will come back next Tuesday. Hopefully we'll get a little "on" time between now and then. I think the family room television was off for three days straight last week (before one of the times it worked). I think everyone was in bed by 9:00 those night ... I remember Hubby remarking "is this because the TV is out?"

Let me tell you though, the boys and their indoor basketball ... that has taken TVs place.
And it's loud!

How would your family react to a television not working?

We do have a television in the master, and while I can't remember the last time Hubs and I watched a movie together, this past week ... we watched FOUR of them. Not sure what prompted it. We only indulged in popcorn for one viewing. Quite the range of feature films ...

  • The Imitation Game: Hubs had seen this on a plane during on of his travels. He wanted to watch it again, and thought I'd like it. I wasn't sold immediately, but it was good. We watched this via Amazon and our Showtime subscription.
  • Kingsman: Another Hubs pick.  I was REALLY not sure about this one. It had a MIB feel ... both the experienced secret service man picking a young unknown to train, and the over-the-top silliness of stuff (the gal with the artificial legs that sliced a man in two). I ended up liking it ok. It is very deserving of the R rating, for violence, gore and language ... and a little sexual content there at the end. We watched this via HBOGo.
  • The Intern: My pick. Heard a lot of good things about it, and it delivered. This was also the movie we indulged in Hubs yummy popcorn.  Redbox.
  • Mission Impossible Rogue Nation: Other than the second MI, I like the Mission Impossible films. As we watched in bed, we joked that we SHOULD be watching together in the gym. Plenty of adrenaline pumping scenes, which is what I like to work out to. I can be lazy and watch in bed just fine too though. Redbox.
Hubs HAD been going to get SPY before changing his mind, and grabbing MI. I'm glad, as I just noticed that "Spy" is available on HBOGo.  Sometimes I forget to even check these other options for movies! I'm also VERY behind on movies. The only one I saw in theaters this past year, was the new Star Wars. I'm pretty content to wait until it hits DVD or a streaming service. I like watching in the comfort of home ... and I LOVE having captions! But I've tended toward television series while I workout, so movies only happen when Hubs and I settle in. Like we did this weekend. Movie marathon!

Motivated Monday - Family Style

Well ... coming off a not great week, and a not great weekend, it's time to get MOTIVATED this Monday. I was a little worried it might be hard to get up this morning. It was Daylight Savings this weekend too. Yesterday, we "lost" an hour. A 6:30 wake up would feel like 5:30....

But, this morning was great! Hubs got up and off around 5:30, and I got up then too! I usually stay in bed, although I rarely fall back asleep. Much better to get up and at it, right? What really nudged me out of bed, was prepping breakfast and lunch for the 17-year old. He has early morning seminary at 6:00, and he's generally pretty self-sufficient. But this past week, he told me he was trying to work on HIS food/fitness. He joined a gym (which is a little pricey, but I have to admit it was a little hard having him and his friends in MY gym last summer "Boys in my Gym") and said he was going to start bringing lunch from home to school (translated "please Mommy can you make me lunches"). He also mentioned I should hold off on buying him treats. I had just bought him a package of mini red-velvet cupcakes. We actually ended up throwing several away.

Anyway - I hadn't committed to to waking up early, so I made his lunch last night. But then this morning I packaged it all up, and made him a protein smoothie (Daddy and Brother recommended) and he was off. I stopped at the store on the way home from Zumba this morning and bought additional fixings for lunches. I'll need to jump back on Pinterest for some healthy ideas (he's not trying to lose weight or anything, just cut back on sugar and processed stuff, eating healthier).

Speaking of Pinterest ... Hubs has joined! I've mentioned it a bit in my day to day doings ... he's also jumped back on the exercise/eating wagon. It's been a few weeks now. He IS trying to lose weight, and also be healthier (cholesterol and blood pressure and such). He's tried several smoothie recipes he's found, and shared some with the munchkins (I don't do smoothies myself). He's done his shopping and meal prep for all his lunches. It's pretty impressive!

I try to have some healthy dinner ideas/options (although evenings are still often crazy around here, and family dinner doesn't always happen).  It's also hard, being SUCH a picky eater myself! This past weekend, when I was a lazy slug, Hubs exercised every day. This morning, he popped up by me on my Fitbit friend list~

 That's usually NOT the case.

Having been on Fitbit for several years, I have a ton of "friends" ... most of whom I don't really know at all. It's always fun when I see someone I actually have a relationship list in the seven featured friends (those three above, three below). I've often been at the topish of my list (3,4,5), and generally no lower than 7,8,9. This weekend's non activity dropped me down to the twenties!

Here's a little later in the morning ... back on top, of Hubs anyway.
Working my way back up into the top10.
My family pretty much ONLY has family on their Fitbit friend list. I love to see how everyone stacks up week to week. I even have my missionary in Mexico send me his steps! He can't connect/sync, so I sent him with just an inexpensive pedometer, and I manually enter his steps into Fitbit every Monday (because that's the day he gets to email me). He's been gone for over a year now, and I've been impressed with him recording and sending me his steps each week. He does it for his Mommy!
The Family Top 10 this week ...

That's my 12-year old at the top of the list. He must have slowed down a little, because for several weeks in a row his average was over 30k! Mr. Missionary is in the #2 position, and my 10-year old is there in third. Fourth position is my 17-year old , then me and Hubs, and #3. Even with his broken wrist, #3 has been participating in gym, and even jogging on the treadmill downstairs. Extended family have Fitbits too. There in the family Top10 are my two brothers and my sister. My dad is very often competitive with everyone. My oldest brother has a Fitbit too (a Surge) ... but he won't be "friends" with any of us ;)

Back to this morning ... all the kids got up and at 'em easily. They are SUCH great kids!

I'm a little over on my eating today,
and I have 10minutes left to get my hour of elliptical.
I did weights though!

Hubs is down on the treadmill right now ... is he trying to get back on top?

WWI #137 - Uber Oops Up

Ummm ... not a great week. I mean the day to day stuff wasn't bad, but my eating and exercise were both off. I actually started good. Friday of last week I had a great day, especially for a Friday. Both for food and fitness. Then ... Sat/Sun were bad, which isn't exactly unusual. Mon was good for exercise, but not eating. Then food stayed high all week, not sure why I couldn't keep it in better control. Fitness slipped a bit too. Not a good week, and it showed on the scale and in the stats.

NUMBERS: Up 2.9 this week for the weekly weigh-in. The common weekend jump, but then I never got it back down. Blah. Average was up .6 to 162.53. Average intake was a whopping 2807. Bad eating! Average daily burn was 2615. I was over this week by 3516.  Here's a quick look at the week ...

#5 and his team after winning the 4th grade championship game!

#1 in Mexico, meeting Elder Oaks at a conference.

I dropped my stuff on the bed after Zumba and my phone caught a photo!

Me and the munchkin at school Parent/Teacher conferences.

Invite your grandparents to lunch day at school.

  • Friday (0304): Got in my hour of elliptical, made it to a Zumba class and even did some resistance training (upstairs, as I couldn't catch the basketball game in the downstairs gym). Kept calories in check too! Good day, especially for a Friday!
  • Saturday (0305): Our house was crazy in the morning, as multiple dads/boys came over to work on Pinewood Derby cars (Hubs hosts an open house ... err, garage every year before the race). #5 and I escaped and went to his championship game. They won! He had a birthday party later in the day, then we watched the state highschool playoffs. Our boys came in second. I only got in 30min elliptical, and eating was UBER over (bad day, and then out to dinner in the evening).
  • Sunday (0306): 15min on the elliptical ... and a nap. Our big Sunday Circles in the morning, and a family gathering in the evening. Over-eating again!
  • Monday (0307): Good activity day! Got in 80min on the elliptical, Zumba, bike and weights! But eating was over.
  • Tuesday (0308): Not sure if I was dragging from weights yesterday, or that I didn't start the day right with early elliptical, but it was a down day. Did get in Zumba, but just 40min elliptical. Can't stop eating. Errands to Vasa and haircuts.
  • Wednesday (0309): Pretty much the same as yesterday, 40minElliptical, Zumba. Slightly higher step count with some shopping and such. High eating again. Errands: dentist and PT conferences.
  • Thursday (0310): Zumba and 40min elliptical. Without the early start, I haven't been getting my full hour in. Had a stop in at the elementary during the day for Grandparent's lunch. Eating ... over.
Eating was SO bad this week.  Girl Scout Cookies had been delivered on Saturday. Tagalongs ... my favorite. I can eat an entire box easily. Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream has been another craving. I'd grabbed some "movie size" candy boxes and those are evil ... if I open it, I eat it all. I KNOW ... just DO NOT buy the stuff and have it in the house to temp. I know ... I just don't do. Ironically, Hubs has been eating better for a few weeks now. Doing food prep on Sundays to plan meals for the week. Exercising too. He's been doing great. #2 also told me not to buy him treats, as he (and friends) are trying to eat better and get in exercise (on their own now that basketball season has ended). #4 has continued his food/fitness push ... I just looked at pictures of him now, compared with pictures of him from several months ago, and he's changed SO much! Why can't I crave a change in eating habits? Healthy has NO appeal to me ...

I also did go through all the clips from the three final championship games for #5 ...
I thought the highlight video turned out cute (my #5 IS #5 ... he chose that number for me) *Ü*

Recent Reads - Multiple Books ... In Space

When I was a little girl ... I loved to read. My mother would sometimes take my book away and tell me to go outside and play. Generally, I had more than one book going. Several stashed various places in my room. If Mom took one away, I'd just pick up another.

Now, I'm a middle-aged woman ... and I still love to read. But unlike my childhood self, I do prefer to start ONE book and finish that book before beginning another. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work out. Why not you ask?  A few years ago, I converted to digital, and it opened new worlds (and libraries) to me. I always have to have a book on my Iphone, I have it with me all the time (not true for a big, bulky physical book).  As an Amazon Prime member, I can borrow a book each month, but said book can only be read on the Kindle itself (not on my Iphone app). Just a month or so ago, I finally adapted to audio, which adds extra "reading" possibilities; while driving, cleaning the house, etc. Having these different devices, various ways to read, has made it so that I often have more than one book going at a time.

Today, I finished two books.  Both were the final books in their series. Both took place in space (one in a completely different star system, one on Earth's moon). Both series had a different "power couple" for each book, with everyone coming together in the end. I really enjoyed both series.

I started The Lunar Chronicles back in August of 2013 (thanks Good Reads for keeping track of my books) and read Scarlet right after. Then I had to wait ... as Cress hadn't come out yet. I read it May 2014 and then had to wait (until now) for Winter. It's the first time in my life I've ever said "I'm looking forward to Winter". I'm not a fan of fairy tales, so I wasn't sure this series would be one I'd enjoy. Just another "Cinderella" story ... well this wasn't. I wasn't very happy when I realized book 2 was shifting focus, rather than continuing on with the Cinder story. But while new characters were introduced (Scarlet and Wolf ... a Red Riding Hood theme), Cinder was still very present, as was her storyline. Cress, if you can't tell from the cover, introduces a "Rapunzel" based character, and Winter ... is the Snow White tale. All of this is in a distant future with androids and cyborgs and life on the moon, mystical mental abilities and more. Very entertaining, and the series is complete, so you can read all the books back to back. There are several novellas to give additional insight and background as well. Two thumbs up!

Winter was my "iphone" book ... and even at 800+ pages, it felt like a quick read!

I feel like I stumbled upon the "Starbound" series. It came across one of my "free/cheap" digital booklist emails, offering the first book in the series "These Broken Stars" for 99¢. That is a good price for a book (one that retails for $10 physical, $4.50 for Kindle) and I even had some Amazon credit (for taking no rush shipping instead of the 2-day prime). I hadn't heard of it, none of my friends had read it ... but it had good reviews. I bought it, read it, loved it. LOVED it.  It had been a while since I'd had a story consume me. One where I connected with the characters and was sad when the book ended. I rated this one 5 stars. My library had the next two books in audio format ... but audio? Uggg.  I went ahead and purchased the second book (for the full $10 price too!). Although the characters from the first book made brief appearances in book 2, it wasn't a continuation of their story. I still liked it, but not as much. I was attempting audio at this point, so instead of purchasing the final book in the trilogy, I put it on hold at the library. I actually enjoyed it as audio. The readers (especially the guy) really added personality in their voice. Again, it wasn't quite the same magic as the first book. There were times in book 2 and 3 I felt like I was pushing through a bit. A touch confused at some things. But in the end ... it was a very complete and satisfying ending. Ahhhh again.

I still have a book on my Kindle that I'm close to finishing. I'll be adding another audiobook, and of course one on my Kindle app on my Iphone. I'm not reading a physical book right now, but that would be another format, it's own style with it's own reading requirements.

Sometimes, it's a little hard to keep all my stories straight in my head.
Check back next month for more Recent Reads. *Ü*

WWI #136 - Down a Pound

Well look at that ... there was a shift in the scale. I'm actually a little surprised. Crunching the numbers, it really wasn't a great week, but I'll take it. Just a bit more and hopefully I can bid these 160s goodbye. NUMBERS: Weight went down 1 pound for the official weekly weigh-in, but the average was actually up a touch (to 161.93). Average Daily Intake was up to 2357, Average Daily Burn about the same as the past few weeks, at 2650. That did result in a deficit, albeit a super small one ... -339.

FITNESS: I got in my hour of elliptical and hour of Zumba in everyday except Sat/Sun. I started the week strong, getting in a couple sessions on the bike, and I did do weights three times this week (30min full body).  Sunday was my rest day. Very low steps.  FOOD: Mint chocolate chip ice cream has been a downfall. One really bad day (Sunday), several high days, only one day under 2000. Not great. FAMILY: Busy with a couple appointments and basketball. Here's a quick recap of the week:

  • Friday (0226): Pretty good day for a Friday. #3 was out of school, so I was able to hit a Zumba class. Also got in my hour of elliptical and weights. In the evening, #5 had a double header. It was downtown so I had to catch a ride. Both games were easy wins for our boys.
  • Saturday (0227): Just 40min on the elliptical, catching up on Grey's Anatomy. #5 had a game at 1:00, and another at 3:00 if they won the first. It was SUCH a close game, we lost by one. The boys were so sad. I dropped #5 off at a friend's house to help distract from the disappointment.
  • Sunday (0228): Hubs stayed super busy today, while I was a completely lazy loafer! Not even 3500 steps! And of course it was a horrible eating day too, uberly over.
  • Monday (0229): Back to routine. Hour of elliptical and Zumba, plus bike and weights. Good day. Still too high on the eating, but I was hungry. Took #3 to the doctor for his cast.
  • Tuesday (0301): Got in Zumba, an hour of elliptical and bike. Busy morning making eggs and taking them to the high school (breakfast before the basketball team headed out) and then in the afternoon taking #3 to the dentist. Nothing much in the evening though. Ahhhh...
  • Wednesday (0302): An hour of elliptical and Zumba for my activity today. I also did weights. In the evening #5 had a game downtown. It was close, but they won and move onto the semi-finals.
  • Thursday (0303): Zumba and hour of elliptical ... and that was all. I should have gotten something else in, but at least I kept calories in check today. In the evening, the high school was playing in the state quarter-finals. #2, #3 and Hubs went to that. I went with #5, who had two games (in different locations). They lost the first, won the second.
 Pictures from the Week ...

#3 and his new cast. I ask for a picture and I get this pose ...

Second Opinions w/Scosche

A spotlight on the Scosche RHYTHM plus Heart Rate Monitor Armband

I'm a gadget girl ... and I also like second opinions on any of my stat estimates.  When I updated my basic pedometer for a Fitbit, I still wore my old Omron and compared the steps. I finally gave up the Omron when I added the ChargeHR (keeping my One also, so I still have two step/calorie estimates). I was really interested in the ChargeHR, after struggling with a Polar HRM. I loved tracking my heart rate during exercise, but I hated the chest strap. HATED it! I'd put up with it during my Zumba classes, but then it's accuracy seemed to go wonky after a while. There was a huge appeal to Fitbit's ChargeHR. A heartrate reading without a chest strap. After trouble-shooting the Polar (washing the strap, using a lube, changing the battery) I wore both HRMs for a while and loved comparing the stats. They were pretty close much of the time.

I finally gave up on the Polar though, the chest strap was too uncomfortable, I'd have to remember to put the watch on and start it, and manually record the stats. The ChargeHR was so easy ... but I did miss my second opinion. I also missed the constant display (I have to tap or press a button to bring up the heart rate on the ChargeHR).

A friend would post her Zumba stats sometimes, and I was intrigued by what she was using. It was the Scosche RHYTHM plus Heart Rate Monitor Armband. I looked it up on Amazon, and it had really good reviews. So ... Merry Christmas to me.

Double Duty Armband Attack

I started using the Scosche with the New Year. I hadn't realized that in addition to the Scosche, you needed to have an app on your smartphone to collect the data it sends. Upon my friend's recommendation, I went with digifit, which did require the Pro Upgrade ($8) to work with my device. Everything was pretty easy to set up. The Scosche recommended wearing on it on the forearm, but as I already had my ChargeHR there, I tried moving it to my upper arm (as in the picture up top).

So I'm back to my backup heart rate readings ...
Here's a look at one class comparison. Scosche (top) and ChargeHR (bottom)

I only wear the Scosche for my longer workouts, like Zumba. I did try it out on my elliptical and bike just to see how it compared as well, but just a time or two (and those workouts tend to be quite consistent). It does come in quite a bit higher than my Charge. Even when there isn't as much of a discrepancy between the heart rate, the calorie burn estimate on the Scosche is way over my Fitbit(s). I go with the lower estimates for my calorie counting needs, but it's still interesting to compare and contrast the numbers from class to class and try to beat my own highs on each device.

So while I do like my Scosche, and I don't regret buying it ... I personally would still recommend the Fitbit ChargeHR over it. While the Scosche isn't uncomfortable, it has pinched the skin a few times. I only wear it when I exercise, whereas I leave my ChargeHR on all day (getting not only feedback on heart rate during activity, but also at rest). But I do like my backup. Second opinions and all. I am a gadget girl!

February 2016

February ... a short month, but we did get an extra day this year.
I felt like it was a pretty good month.

WEIGHT: I started the month at 164.6 and ended at 163.5. High was 166.1 and the low was 160.20. Average for the month was 162.66. ACTIVITY: I started to get back to more of my routine, hitting my early elliptical and getting in an hour most days. I bombed on my biking, only getting in a couple of sessions. I got in four weight workouts during the month though. 20 Zumba classes in the 29 days of February.  STATS: Average intake was 2122, average burn 2653 (my manual stats differ slightly from Fitbit, as you can see in the chart above). Average steps for the month were 19489. 225.45 miles. 150 minutes spent on strength training, 3071 "active minutes" during the month.

As far as FAMILY stuff ... we cheered on Superbowl Sunday, I indulged in salted caramels around Valentine's Day and we celebrated a birthday for #2. Basketball was still keeping us busy, and Hubs had a few derbies. I started listening to audiobooks, rocking the headphones as I got steps in. #3 got an Apple Watch, and then tumbled down the Fitbit friends list as he stopped wearing his Flex ... and broke his wrist (that does limit his activity some). There were a few doctor and dental appointments this month, president's day (no school), and that does screw up the schedule somewhat. I like my routine!

*** JenB's Journal ***

0201 (Monday) 164.6. Steps 22044. Total Burn 2827. Exercise Burn 1120/1064 (60minElliptical, Zumba, 30minWeights, 10minHula). Calories in 1600. Back to the routine. It was a snowy morning and traffic was pretty bad on both trips to the schools to drop of kidlets. I didn't think I'd make it to Draper in a timely fashion (if at all) so I didn't make it to class, but I still did Zumba on my own. The entire hour. Also got in elliptical and WEIGHTS! Threw in a little hula hoop too. I had basketball mom dinner duty over at the high school. I was bringing rolls and salad, the other moms had prepared meatballs in sauce for meatball subs. I'd arranged for #3 to come over to the high school after his practice ended (as I couldn't grab him on time) and he ended up having one too. I guess I'll have to try making them at home for dinner sometime. It doesn't appeal to me at all, which isn't a bad thing. I had promised to make french dip, and even though the older boys had eaten and hubs wasn't hungry, the little guys wanted it, so I made that back at home. Another meal that doesn't tempt me ... and I actually kept calories in check today!

0202 (February) 163.9. Steps 22990. Total Burn 2742. Exercise Burn 970/1000 (40minElliptical, Zumba, BBP Walk). Calories in 1500. I've got the morning routine down pretty good now, even with #4 using my gym. He's up and on the treadmill/bike early, generally off in time for me to get in a quick 10min session before I take #3 to school. Then, I can usually get in a 20min session once I get back, before taking the munchkins. Again, this is because #4 is now cooking his own breakfast for himself and his brother (usually scrambled eggs). It's nice to get in 30minutes before Zumba! I was feeling a bit stiff and sore after weights yesterday, it did impact my dancing a bit ... definitely made that final lunge stretch impossible! I really should be getting more done during the day on Tuesdays as it's more open for me. I made a quick Walmart run, as #4 wanted yogurt and english muffins. But still feeling so tired, caved to a nap today. After picking up kids from school, I dropped #4 off at a friend's house (yup, you read that right, #4, my homebody!) and then went to the high school to watch #2 play in his basketball game. He had 9 points in the first quarter! Okay, no more points after that. Out for a bit with a bloody nose. We got the win though, as did sophomore, but Varsity lost. Hubs came to watch (although he missed the first quarter) and after it ended I sent him to pick up the pizza I'd ordered, while I went and grabbed #4 from his friend's house. Then it was time to take #5 to his basketball practice. I forgot to change my shoes, I was wearing clunky boots, not good for walking in, even if it is just walking the hallways. I also had pants without pockets, so I had to hold my iphone while I listened to my audio book. I was tired, but told myself I needed to get in 4000 steps, which got me to 22k for the day. I also kept calories in check again today!

0203 (Wednesday) 163.4. Steps 23787. Total Burn 2901. Exercise Burn 1060/1145 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2100. Got in my early elliptical and then hit Zumba. Afterward I stopped at Maceys, as they had some good sales, restocked the fruit snacks. I always get steps shopping, then there is the bringing the groceries inside and down to the food storage room. I took the time to put everything away too. Hubs came home early from work because he was exhausted and had to take #4 downtown to the Jazz game tonight. He got in a little nap. I picked up the kids from school and then put on my headphones and got a little cleaning in. I finally finished up my first audiobook (Sinner) and started on another. Hubs and #4 got off to their game, and I took #5 to his game. 9:00 start time clear across town, but it wasn't as bad as I had thought. Pretty close to where I grew up. Our boys got beat easily, but my munchkin did get some points. He fell asleep on the way home. Hubs said #4 fell asleep to and from their game (the Jazz won) and then only beat us home by a bit. #2 was last home, he works Wednesdays.

0204 (Thursday) 163.6. Steps 25001. Total Burn 2884. Exercise Burn 1075/1096 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 1200. Got in some early elliptical then hit Zumba. Stopped at Kmart afterward, but those weekly trips may be coming to an end, because it was just announced that FitStudio is coming to an end. Bummer! Got in some additional elliptical ... and a nap. #3 stayed after school, I picked him up at 5:00 to get him home and changed and picked up for his 6:00 game. I was sitting this one out as it was clear across town in rush hour traffic and I just didn't feel up to it - and I needed to get #4 to practice anyway. #5 came along too, but unlike previous weeks, they didn't allow anyone who wasn't on an actual team to play on any of the hoops. So it was boring for him. I just dropped the kids and ran down the street to Maceys, as some of my purchases yesterday had been rung up incorrectly. I got that straightened out, and got a little walking in while I waited. Then #5 and I had a little time to kill before his 9:00 game ... except that oops, it had started at 8:00! I'm not sure how I did that! I had it on the calendar correctly and everything. Poor little munchkin held it together, played a couple minutes ... but once we got back into the car after he broke down sobbing. I so looks forward to his games and I felt so bad. I've never screwed up on the time before, even with all our games. I hope he forgives me. I did keep it a very low calorie day.

0205 (Friday) 162.7. Steps 12360. Total Burn 2248. Exercise Burn 500/495 (50minElliptical). Calories in 2650. Early morning practice for #3, and he stayed at school again ... which saved me two trips back and meant I could have hit a Zumba class, except that I'd scheduled a doctor's appointment for the morning. It should have been pretty routine ... removal of my paraguard IUD, and I was going to try Minera. Except ... the doctor couldn't find it. And he looked and looked! So, I get to come back on Tuesday for an ultrasound to see if it can be located and then go from there. I'm not super stressed about it, but it didn't go as planned. I didn't have a lot of motivation after that. Early out at the elementary, picked up middle school, then drove across town to my old Alma Mater to watch #2 in his JV game. Funny, I didn't go to basketball games when I went to school there. Our boys won easily. #3 had come with me to watch, but he wasn't feeling well. Hubs was home when we got back, and it was early enough that we could have had a date, except he wasn't feeling very well either. Oh well, I was already over my calories for the day anyway.
0206 (Saturday) 163.3. Steps 9238. Total Burn 2089. Exercise Burn 100/336 (10minElliptical). Calories in 2800. Neither of the little boys had games today (much to the chagrin of #5) but #3 had TWO later in the day, and they were important ones! Unfortunately, I was up with him in the night as he was coughing and spiked a fever of 102.3°. I should have hit a baby shower for a cousin, but Hubs was working and I didn't want to be away from the kids (especially Mr. Sicky) that long (it was a ways a way, I would have had to hitch a ride as it was beyond my comfort zone). So I ended up not leaving the house all day, alternating fever medications so the kid wouldn't get too high, but he was miserable, poor thing. And nothing sounds good to eat either. For him anyway, I managed to eat a lot. I'd cleaned out #2's room the other day, and brought out a HUGE rice krispie treat he'd been given a while ago. He gave is the go ahead to eat it ... and we did. Just one tiny session on the elliptical, and then I never got back downstairs.

0207 (Sunday) 164.4. Steps 4714. Total Burn 1866. Exercise Burn 0/97 (no exercise). Calories in 2300. Hubs went to work this morning, so we didn't do our Sunday Circles, but I did make french toast, bacon and hashbrowns.  #3 seemed a bit better than yesterday, but stayed laying down most of the day. It was Superbowl Sunday! We really aren't big into football, but #4 has been following it this past year or so, so he was planning on watching. We usually do a big Superbowl Smorgasbord with steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, rolls ... a big, yummy spread. But with Hubs not feeling well, I didn't know if he had the energy to prep, and be out in the cold to BBQ, much less prepare food at all if he is sick. So we postponed the feast. I made chicken and yellow rice, which is a favorite of the little boys, so they were appeased. I also made our traditional Superbowl sugar cookies, which look like footballs.Yes ... I ate a cookie too. Calories were over for the day, especially with no exercise.

0208 (Monday) 166.1. Steps 21901. Total Burn 2879. Exercise Burn 1050/1110 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2200. Oops, there is the weekend scale shift! Hubs said he didn't get any sleep last night :(  He went into work, but then gave up and came home. I got in my early elliptical and got the kids off to school. #3 went, but I told him to call me if he couldn't last through it. I hit Zumba in Draper. We were in the smaller, backup church, as the carpets were being cleaned at the Stake Center. Maga and Olivia came for part of it. Home for a bit, then off to the elementary to watch #4 in his school Shakespeare play. Yes, he had to wear tights. He did good, just a small part. Did have a hard time hearing/understanding most of the kids. It was "A Midsummer Night's Dream" ... got out just in time to grab #3 from school. He had basketball practice but didn't feel up to it. In the evening, we all (sans #2 who had team dinner) went downtown to see the Harlem Globetrotters perform. The little boys enjoyed it, #3 seemed a bit ornery, but he's not feeling well so I'll forgive him. I just hate driving (just being in a car, of course I'm not driving) downtown, especially in the dark, on the freeways, all the lights and the stress just makes me feel sick.

0209 (Tuesday) 164.1. Steps 29145. Total Burn 2989. Exercise Burn 1250/1243 (60minElliptical, Zumba). I had my followup doctor appointment at 10:00, but still got in my Zumba, because it was my early class. I didn't get in early elliptical though. I'd hoped for some definite answers today, but it was just the ultrasound (very thorough one) with the scans being sent off to the radiologist and doctor and I'll have to wait to hear. I looked like it was still there ... we'll see I guess. Stopped at the store after to restock on fruit (grapes are the only thing that #3 has been able to eat since he's been sick). I did get in my hour of elliptical throughout the day. #3 stayed after school for practice. I went to the high school after picking up the little ones, to watch #2 in his JV game. Hubs ended up coming, and brought #5, and Maga showed up too. Unfortunately, the team didn't do great, behind the entire time and ending with a loss by nine points. This team (Bingham) is our toughest opponent. Varsity lost as well. I took #5 to his last practice, and listened to my audio book, walking while I waited ... got in 6000 steps. I actually kept calories in check, which was a bit surprising as once I'd gotten home in the morning I'd binged on a box of Milk Dudes. Ate the whole thing, which was 3.5 servings ... but then I got back on track and didn't eat a lot else (it helped that it was a busy evening!)

0210 (Wednesday) 162.5. Steps 22768. Total Burn 2887. Exercise Burn 1040/1138 (60minElliptical, Zumba, 30minWEIGHTS). Calories in 2350. Got in my early elliptical, then hit Zumba. A little more elliptical and I even did weights! Usual pickups after school. #2 off to work, and I ran #3 to Jump N Bounce to hang out with his friends. #5 had a late (9:00) game clear across town. This was the location I didn't feel up to hitting last week for #3's game (it was at 6:00 and rush hour traffic) ... I decided to brave it myself and it went fine, even though it was a little foggy out. Now that I've started listening to audiobooks, I like to have them on during a longer ride. The game before ours was close and went over, so the 9:00 start was even later. I walked the hallways a bit, and got in 2000+ steps and hit goal for the day. We'd thought this was a game we would win, but the other team came out strong and we couldn't hit much (although #5 did get a 3-point buzzer beater to tie things up at the half). Hubs was out cold when I got home, but I could NOT get to sleep for hours.

0211 (Thursday) 162.5. Steps 23134. Total Burn 2902. Exercise Burn 1020/1153 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2100.  I got in some early elliptical as I got the boys to school. Then I got to make another trip back to the elementary as #4 was receiving an award. He was one of the first to receive his, and then he was excused as he had his play ... so I snuck out rather than waiting through the program. I made it to Zumba and got about 45min in. Afterward I stopped at Kmart, the drycleaners, and picked up prescriptions at Smiths. Back at home, I did an additional 15min Zumba to equal my hour, and additional elliptical to equal my hour there. #3 had a 6:00 game. As we arrived, I realized I'd left my video camera home! I never forget! Hubs brought it to me, and then stayed to watch the game, and it was pretty close, but we got the win (and I made the video*Ü*). #4 also had a game, but I didn't go, but arranged for a ride for him while Hubs and I took a call. They got squished, but #5 made 2 of the 4 points.

0212 (Friday) 162.3. Steps 18944. Total Burn 2695. Exercise Burn 1000/948 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 1700. #3 had early morning practice again ... so I could hit Zumba, but the class actually changed to a 9:30 start time to help out the mom's with the late start (not that I needed it today). I also got in my hour of elliptical. I dropped #5 off to get a ride to his practice, then I went to watch #2 play in his JV game at the high school. They won. Four of the boys on the opposing team had played with my son many years ago. It was fun being able to recognize them after all these years. Kept calories in check today.

0213 (Saturday) 161.7. Steps 17376. Total Burn 2323. Exercise Burn 200/579 (20minElliptical). Calories in 3200. I went over to the church in the morning to watch #3 play churchball. It was pretty low-key, everyone being supportive, not very competitive. #4 probably could have played and had fun. He had his game at 2:00 ... but he didn't want to go, and I didn't force him. Thus ends his season. I guess I'm glad as he was no longer enjoying it. That opened up my afternoon, so Hubs and I went out for an early dinner. Unfortunately, I hadn't banked calories, not planning on this outing, but it was yummy. #3 had two games in the evening, at 7:00 and 9:00. I got about an hour of walking in before the first and between the two games. We got beat both times, and #4 was out with a bloody nose much of the second game. I really don't know why we do this AAU tournaments, as we usually get trounced. We were missing two of our better players in this one too, only six boys, so not a lot of rest.

0214 (Sunday) 163.2. Steps 6600. Total Burn 1990. Exercise Burn 200/237 (20minElliptical). Calories in 2000. We had a family valentine breakfast. Food always makes me sleepy, so I then took a nap, but I did get in a session on the elliptical too. In the evening we went to my folks for our annual family gathering. Hubs made his waffles and we played games. Of course #4 only wanted to watch basketball stuff, but I was able to log him onto Grandma's computer to watch.

0215 (Monday) 163.2. Steps 24918. Total Burn 2810. Exercise Burn 821/1055 (40minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2650. President's Day. Slept in a little, as the kids were out of school. I don't know if I would have made it to my Zumba class, as it's my further drive ... and one I'd need to make again later in the day ... but my SIL had said she was coming, so I went (and she didn't). I was glad I went though. I'm not sure I would have got in a solid hour workout otherwise. I did get in a couple sessions on the elliptical, catching up with last night's The Walking Dead. Went out to Soccer City ... should be called "Chaos City" for #3's basketball game. No parking as usual, but more steps on my pedometer as I had to park so far away, right? Then the games were running late, so I put on my noise cancelling headphones (thank HEAVENS for noise cancelling, as it is SO noisy with four games going on at once) and tried to walk around, but it was a little hard, as it was really crowded. There was also a football activity going on. I'm thinking the place was at or over it's 600 person limit (fire hazard). It was physically painful to my ears when I took the headphones off to watch the game. I videoed, but it's a lousy location, so much background distraction. Our boys did get the win though. Seriously though, I always leave Soccer City in a foul mood. I hate it (for basketball). I ran to Walmart and Sams to grab some stuff. Hubs was home early, but then left for a boy's night. I made a spaghetti dinner for the boys ... unfortunately I eat some of that too and I was already over on calories after indulging in some ice cream and sugar babies.

0216 (Tuesday) 163.6. Steps 22653. Total Burn 2847. Exercise Burn 1082/1092 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 1800. Got in some early elliptical while getting the boys off to school. I was running Zumba today, as Marian was out of town, so I had prepped and went straight to the church after dropping off the boys. I was early, but still not the first one there (Suzanne was). We made sure everything was set up (chairs out of the way, foyer open but chapel closed, music ready to go. It was a smaller group today, but it went fine. I got in some additional elliptical in. I had to pick up #3 from school and take him to an orthodontist appointment. I just dropped him, and ran to Maceys to grab a few groceries. Got them home and put away and then picked #3 up and took him back to school ... school was over, but he had basketball practice. I'd arranged a ride home for him, because I was heading out East to #2's game. It was a longer drive than I'd anticipated (and I'm one to err on the side of caution). I did listen to my audiobook to and from. I barely made it there in time for tip off. I don't like to miss the first part of the game, especially because my kid seems to score in the first few minutes (he made the first five points for the team). Our boys got behind by a bit, but then pulled it out in the fourth for the win. Maga came out to catch the last half. Hubs was in MY gym, so I did some kitchen cleanup and then got in my final 10min session to equal my hour. I'd worked a little on the computer today too, inputting Zumba stats. I was a lot more active back in October! Got a blog post up too. Kept calories in check, even though I didn't actually eat good.

0217 (Wednesday) 162.8. Steps 23076. Total Burn 2952. Exercise Burn 1143/1092 (60minElliptical, Zumba, Bike, WEIGHTS). Calories in 2000. Early rising today, as there was a "morningside" at the church by the high school. Now #2 should have gone, but as he usually attends early morning seminary, he considered today a day to sleep in. #3 wanted to go however, so lucky me, I got to get him there at 6:15. Oh well, up and at it early. I still only got my 30min early elliptical in, I'd thought maybe I'd get an extra one (but #4 is in my gym much of the early morning). I went to Zumba then came straight home. Usually I run errands, but as I'd been shopping Mon and Tuesday I really didn't need to do anything today. Got a blog post up (and got caught up on entering all my Zumba stats, which I hadn't done in months) and made a muvee of yesterday's basketball game. I'd put in a pot roast for dinner. Yummy and filling.  #5 had a game at 7:00 at Bennion Jr, which is close (except that we had to take a detour due to an accident on 2700W) and it's good for videoing ... especially for our uniforms, which match the color of the gym too. We'd played this same team earlier in the season and lost, but the boys were able to win it tonight! My munchkin had the high with 9 points (one of those a 3-pointer). It was only 8:30 when we got back home, but Hubs was already in bed asleep. He's just started exercising (and eating right) again and it's wearing him out! I wasn't quite ready for bed, so I did a final elliptical session, then did 30min on the stationary bike (which I hadn't done in forever). I really needed a shower but didn't want to wake Hubs. It took a while for me to get to sleep.

0218 (Thursday) 162.1. Steps 22026. Total Burn 2810. Exercise Burn 1071/1083 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2000. I got in some early elliptical, and made sure I was early to Zumba as well, as I had Marian's box, and it's been needed the last few weeks. This group has their own box, but since there were key changes a bit ago, they haven't been able to get into the closet where it is. I dropped off the box to Marian after (as she leaves early to get to work). It was a weird weather day! Cloudy and overcast, but then the sun peeked through on my drive home and it felt SO wonderful! But there was wind, which is not good on garbage day. So many cans were blown over. I bagged up a bunch of newspapers to keep our recycling weighted (after picking it and all it's contents up). Then ... thunder and lightening! One so big the house rumbled. I worried how #4 (who has a weather phobia) was handling it at school and expected a call ... but he survived. Then there was hail, then snow. It really just made me want to curl up in bed. I must admit, I did. I did keep food somewhat in check, although overdosed on mint chocolate chip ice cream. The evening was a bit crazy too. #3 had double games, but I had to drop him off at a teammate's house to catch a ride. Then I SHOULD have taken #4 to 7th grade orientation, but he suddenly came down with a stomach ache and said he really wasn't up to going. So we skipped it (a neighbor will fill me in). I'd also asked #4 if he wanted me to make arrangements to go to the Junior Jazz Player Appearance with a friend, but he didn't really want to do that either. I took #5 to his game. We had a surprising start, getting the first four points, but then the other team started smashing us. They weren't big, not even 4th graders I'd bet. We did get 16 points, so still not a horrid game for us either (although we lost) but these kids do lack some of the skills needed for playing superleague (just getting rebounds, getting through a press). It can be a little frustrating to watch. This was the last regular game, then the single-elimination tournament starts ... and should end us pretty quick. This team is not going to continue for Spring, but that's okay as #5 still has his other team to play on. #3 lost both their games too, although it sounds like #3 had a decent game himself in the second one. Off to bed ... which is not the same as off to sleep. I've really had trouble falling asleep these last couple days!

0219 (Friday) 161.4. Steps 21038. Total Burn 2773. Exercise Burn 993/1031 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 1800. Early morning basketball practice for #3, so I got in early elliptical and made it to a Zumba class; Debbie in Daybreak. I stopped at Smiths for some groceries. I realized I forgot to make #4 his lunch! But he survived, it was hot dogs for school lunch, which he likes (cold lunch he just doesn't have to wait in line, so he gets out to recess faster). Early out at the elementary, no middle school pickup, as they were walking over to the high school to watch the basketball game there. I was on snack bar duty, and also did the first pick up of Chick-fil-a sandwhiches. I'd arranged for #5 to be picked up for his practice as I was at the high school all afternoon. Thank heavens for nice teammates who are willing to help out! Sophomores won by a ton. JV game was tight until the fourth, and then the other team seemed to stop trying. So, a win for us for our last game. Varsity won too (tight until the fourth quarter when our boys came out strong for the win). It was senior night, but I didn't stick around for that ceremony as #4 was home alone (Hubs had joined me at the game).  Early to bed night. I had kept calories in check all day, and I wanted a little ice cream there at the end ... but I resisted.

0220 (Saturday) 160.2.  Steps 11475. Total Burn 2195. Exercise Burn 450/459 (40minElliptical). Calories in 2000. Started the day with 20min on the elliptical ... well, 19min really, as right there at the end I felt completely woozy and lightheaded. I quickly lay down (on the treadmill, it was closest) for a bit until I felt a bit better. Sweet Oreo came and lay on my chest (not sure if that helped at all though). I did manage to make it back down for a couple 10min sessions to finish my episode (catching up on Grey's Anatomy). #3 had a game, and there were team pictures before, so we headed to West Jordan High. It's always good to get the team pictures before the game, just in case they lose ... which they did. It was against Sunset, who we've won three out of the four times we played. But Sunset (well ... Corbin!) was ON today and our boys couldn't keep up. If there is any team (other than our own) that we'd like to win the championship, it would be Sunset, so good luck to them! If they play like they did today, they can take it! For Spring, they are taking the best boys from West Hills and Sunset to combine them, hopefully a pre-sophomore team for high school next year. #3 was invited to be on it and he is excited to play with his Sunset friends again. Hubs and #5 came for the end of the game, then Hubs took #3 home and I took #5 across town to his game. Our boys couldn't even score for the first half, it was a little discouraging. It was a bit frustrating too, as we were playing a team from the upper level. If they are going to do that, they should have one of the top team play, not us! We did manage to get some points in the second half anyway. #5 doesn't mind if I play my audiobook through the car speaker system, so we listened to my book both ways. Hubs bought me some wireless headphones for around the house too, as the wired ones kept catching as I unloaded the dishwasher or did other housework. I'm looking forward to trying them out. I'd been happy with the weigh-in this morning, so that did motivate me to keep Saturday eating in check.

0221 (Sunday) 160.6. Steps 12288, Total Burn 2240. Exercise Burn 450/491 (40minElliptical). Calories in 2300. Happy birthday to #2 ... 17 years old. A couple of his basketball buddies showed up early in the morning to kidnap him for a bit. We bypassed our usual Sunday Circles breakfast, as we were having our steak smorgasbord later in the day. I didn't eat much of anything most of the morning and afternoon, attempting to bank calories for dinner. Hubs and I did some shopping, then both laid down for a little, but neither of us actually fell asleep. I did get in some cleaning steps, in addition to getting in some elliptical.  Hubs did some weekly food prep, then started dinner. I'd marinated the chicken earlier, and then made Brazilian cheese rolls. Dinner was delicious, and #2 was even there to enjoy it with us ... I'd threatened to bring the entire family and balloons and embarrass him if he didn't ask for his birthday off at work! His favorite is red velvet cake ... which actually doesn't appeal to me at all, so that helped out on my calorie consumption. I did indulge in a little ice cream though.

0222 (Monday) 162.6. Steps 22040. Total Burn 22040. Exercise Burn 1029/1077 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 1500. Well, certainly a scale shift after our dinner last night. Not unexpected, and still lower than most Monday mornings recently. I started off the day good with early elliptical and then hit Zumba. I stopped at Maceys for some groceries on the way home. I really didn't have anything much on the docket for the day, so I'd planned on hitting weights, and trying to get some treadmill or bike. It didn't turn out that way though. I got a call around 2:00 from the middle school saying #3 had fallen hard in gym, and that his wrist was most likely broken. A badly bruised knee as well. I went right in, and they had his arm splinted and he was in a wheelchair because he couldn't walk with his knee. We drove straight to the Urgent Care. I was again able to find a wheelchair to get him into the office. But it felt anything but urgent there ... it took forever for them to even check us in. No one even came to check to triage, and there was only the one receptionist handling the urgent care, plus the pediatrician's office and an ear/nose&throat doctor. I'm never going there again. Once we finally got back, the nurse and doctor were very nice. We got x-rays on both the wrist and knee. Wrist is broken, but the knee is just badly bruised. They splinted the arm, and after 3.5 hours we finally made it back home. I'd had to reach out on Facebook to neighbors to find someone to pick up my littles from the elementary school. I had to make another run out to pick up a painkiller prescription so that #3 could get some sleep tonight. What a day. At least it kept calories in check, even if I didn't get in all the exercise I'd anticipated. Good thing I got a bunch in early before everything happened.

0223 (Tuesday) 161.2. Steps 24395. Total Burn 2968. Exercise Burn 1084/1227 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2100. My broken boy had a decent sleep, although kitty woke him early. I guess we'll need to close the door to his room. Although kitty also woke me up, rattling my closed door about 1:30 in the night. Silly kitty! I had some dreams that left me a little off in the morning. Just feeling low and close to tears for no real reason. I did my early elliptical, and it was early Zumba day. Dancing at Zumba did really help me feel better, and seeing my stats up, I made even more of an effort. I didn't get a new high, but did get good numbers. After class, I took the 7th grade schedule in to the local middle school for #4 (as we'd missed his orientation meeting last Thursday night). I was able to check that his permit had been approved. Now just waiting to hear for sure on #3 ... who did go to school today, although I told him I'd be around if he needed to come home and rest. We'd been told to follow up on the wrist, the urgent care recommending a pediatrician there in that practice ... but honestly after the wait yesterday I really didn't want to go back there again. Instead, I called the Riverton clinic where our last break had been treated and got an appointment for the afternoon. #3 has seminary and gym his final two periods, so at least he isn't missing "school" stuff, although he'd had to have his friends help him with writing (it is his right wrist and he's right handed). The doctor confirmed the break, saying it was actually three breaks, but not quite bad enough displacement to require surgery. It was still too swollen for him to want to cast it that day, so we'll come back on Monday for that. We made it back today in time for me to pick up my littles from school myself. I got in some house cleaning while listening to my audiobook. Hubs had a lego derby, and he made the two little ones go help him (much to #4's chagrin, he doesn't like to leave the house especially when there are NBA games on). He does pay them for their help though.  I got in a little additional elliptical, and some blogging and such. A little higher on calories in than I'd hoped, but there was a bit of stress eating.

0224 (Wednesday) 161.4. Steps 22544. Total Burn 2763. Exercise Burn 1057/1059 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2800. Got in some early elliptical, then hit Zumba. Didn't quite get the best HR stats, as some of the songs were unfamiliar to me and harder to follow. Stopped at Walmart after to grab some groceries, and a quick stop at Sears, to get them to remove the tag off some joggers I'd purchased (and had shipped to me to avoid a trip to the store! Grrrr.) Finished up my missionary blog post and prepped a playlist for tomorrow. I SHOULD have gotten in some additional exercise/weights, but I was so sleepy. And being the spoiled sahm that I am, I did take advantage of my alone time to grab a nap. I picked up Mr. Middle School, then the elementary kids, then #3 and I went back to the school for his PT conferences ... student lead conferences, and I didn't really talk to many teachers, but he's at a 4.0 anyway. Hubs had another derby, and did talk #4 into attending with him, even though the child had moaned and cried about it earlier on the way home from school. I took #5 to his basketball game, they lost, which was expected as we were facing the top seed. Eating got a little high, and then Hubs stopped for Popeyes on the way home, so that was a late and rather heavy dinner. I had put off my final 20minutes on the elliptical (to equal my hour) and wasn't sure I'd even get it in, but then I did. Watched "Colony" earlier, and then an episode of "Modern Family" to finish up. #4 has asked me to close the doors to the gym/food storage rooms, so that the kitties can't get in during the night (as he's had a problem with them being there in the morning when he wants to hit the treadmill). But as I came upstairs for a bit, I didn't see the kitties anywhere, even after looking for them. So I went back down and opened up the gym and sure enough, they HAD both been in there! Good thing I checked so they weren't trapped in (without a litter box or food or water) all night!

0225 (Thursday) 161.8. Steps 22578. Total Burn 2942. Exercise Burn 1089/1197 (60minElliptical, Zumba). Calories in 2000. I was awake around 5:30 ... Hubs had left not long before and I was waiting to hear #2 get up, as he has a 6:00 seminary class. As I didn't hear him, I got up and woke him. I got back in bed, but then figured I'd just go ahead a get up. So it was a bit earlier rising than usual. #4 was in my gym, so I did some computer stuff and made lunches. I did get in my early elliptical as I got the boys off to school, and then headed to Zumba, stopping by Marian's to grab her box as she had a meeting. So Zumba today was me, Amanda and Christa leading. It was a pretty small group, and as all three of us were on stage instead of on the floor, it looked smaller still. I think that affected my energy a little, I couldn't quite get the heart rate up as much as I thought I would leading. Still good numbers, but not record setting.

0226 (Friday) 161.4. Steps 19638. Total Burn 2741. Exercise Burn 1150/1013 (60minElliptical, Zumba, WEIGHTS). Calories in 2300.  No early morning basketball practice ... no middle school at all, so I did sleep in a little. But I still got in early elliptical and hit a Zumba class.  I ran #3 out to hang with friends, picked up the munchkins from school (early out), grabbed #3 again. #5 had two Junior Jazz tournament games, downtown ... to where I didn't dare drive. He and I hitched a ride with another family. I wasn't sure what to expect as far as competition. I assumed it would be the better teams that would enter, but it was a complete mis-match, our boys were blowing the other team away. The coach had to tell them not to dribble (just pass), and just defend with feet (no hands) to even give the other team a chance. The second game wasn't quite as bad, but still an uber easy win. I'd done okay on eating ... but then got the munchies late as I was waiting for the boys to get home. Still not too bad for a Friday.

0227 (Saturday) 161.5. Steps 14024. Total Burn 2348. Exercise Burn 435/605 (40minElliptical). Calories in 2300. Slept in, then did some stuff around the house. Got in some elliptical. #5 had a game at 1:00, and then at 3:00 if we won that one. The game was close the entire time. At the end, we made a shot and were up by two with just seconds left, but then the other team made a layup and got fouled ... and made the foul shot for the win. Our boys were SO sad. There were tears. Honestly ... I was fine not going to another game (in which we probably would have gotten killed). #5 had received an invitation to go play with a kid on his other team, so that was a good distraction for him. #3 wanted to go watch the district game finals, so I took him and a couple of friends to that (just dropped them off and picked them up later). Just barely kept intake and burn even today.

0228 (Sunday) 161.5. Steps 3473. Total Burn 1763. Exercise Burn 0/36 (no exercise). Calories in 3050. Lazy Sunday, but planned rest day. Hubs went and jogged the track at the high school though. With Hubs home, we did do our Sunday Circles breakfast. He did run into work for a bit ... I took a nap. In the afternoon we went out to look at a house, Hubs has the building bug. Then Hubs did some meal prep for the week, and then made dinner (marinated flank steak and leftover mashed potatoes from our last BBQ). I had the boys write their brother and got the letters off to our missionary, and I made a muvee, catching up with all of #5's games with his 5th grade team. Updated the blog about it too.
0229 (Monday) 163.5. Steps 24248. Total Burn 2950. Exercise Burn 1345/1196 (60minElliptical, Zumba, Bike, WEIGHTS). Calories in 2500. Well, weight was up, which wasn't too surprising. Good thing I was motivated this Monday. I got in a full 40min on the elliptical in the morning, then hit Zumba. Class was good, both Fitbits registered a burn in the 500s. The Scosche cut off at 45min though, maybe because my phone was being used to play music and a button got pressed or something. I did a quick stop at Maceys on the way home to grab some grapes (and ice cream) before their sale ended. Not too much time at home before I had to head out to the middle school to pick up #3 for his doctor's appointment. It was a bit of a wait, made me a nervous about getting back to pick up the littles, but we made it. #3 wanted a black cast, but they didn't have that color, so he went with navy. I was able to get some bike and weights in, and cleaned up the kitchen a bit. Simple dinner (chicken alfredo and cheese bread) ... it did push me over on calories as I had indulged in ice cream as well. It was nice not having anything in the evening, so we could all go to bed early.
