Zumba Stats 2017

I'm a numbers gal ... I have no idea if my Fitbits (I wear both the One and the ChargeHR) are giving me accurate estimates as far as calorie burn, steps and heart rate.  I figure if I use the numbers to compare MY experience class to class, it will still be information worth having.

Based on previous stats ... for an hour Zumba class, I really hope to achieve a burn of 400+, steps over 6000 and I'm still figuring out heart rate (even after more than a year). An average at least in the 120s ... hopefully "in cardio zone" for at least 40min in an hour. Highs have reached over 500 calories, steps over 8000, AvHR ... in 2015 I was using a Polar (had some 139 numbers), with  my ChargHR in 2016 I only slipped into the 130s a couple of times. I also tried the Scosche HRM, a high there of 152 (it was always higher. I have quit the Scosche this year, sticking with just the ChargeHR for heart rate.)

Beyond basic stats ... for a while there I was hitting Zumba four days a week with absolute regularity. Weekdays, Mon-Thursday, four different classes. Occasionally I'd hit a Fri/Sat or an extra evening class.

So THIS will be a post in progress ... I'll update it each month with the stats. How many classes, the highs and lows, and fun photos. It's a new year. The chart image is small (to fit on the blog) but can be enlarged if you click on it.

NOT starting off good for January 2017 ...

Only eight classes for the entire month of January. I didn't hit my Monday Southziders once (it's my furthest to travel to, but it's a favorite! I usually get good stats there.) A couple of those Mondays were holidays (New Year's Day, MLK day) with kids out of school (and the class was actually cancelled ... not that I would have gone anyway). I've still been in a holiday slump, then got bogged down with sickness (nothing too bad, but it really messed with my motivation). I needed to step up and help teach a class ... which ended up being my high (as is often the case, being up on the stage and picking all the songs I know and like).  I got pretty great numbers that day! The ChargeHR 549, avHR of 131. Those numbers might be hard to beat.

February 2017
Again, not a great month. Not sure what I need to do to regain my motivation. Just 10 Zumba classes this month. Just two Monday classes ... once with Southziders, once with Debbie. I even missed one of my Tuesdays with Marian. I did get a good heart rate reading there at the start of the month though!

March 2017
14 classes. It's not that I'm burned out on Zumba ... well, maybe a little. It's more I got out of the habit. I hit my Tuesday/Thursday classes with consistency as always but all other days are off. One MZL on a Friday when the older boys were out of school. Mid month I started some "practice" Zumba on my own on Mondays and Wednesdays ... 30 minutes each time. 10 classes total and 2.5 hours on my own. No great numbers/stats this month though.

April 2017

...14 classes in April, a bit of "me" practice time too. I went back to Southziders once this month. I'm just out of the habit there ... it's a bit further, later start (so I don't get home until 11:00 or later) and they've moved more to the Zumba "strong" and I prefer the dance. I got a couple "subs" too ... met Cindy, subbing for Debbie when school was out one Friday, and a funeral cancelling Marian's Tuesday classes allowed me to hit Heather's, which was fun.

 May 2017
17 official classes ... a couple days I did a full hour on my own (and some other smaller sessions). Pretty much just the "regulars" this month. This was the final month for Mountain View, which will be closing down. Sad about that ... but I do have a backup class!

June 2017

20 official classes, and two "classes" (full hour) on my own ... plus plenty of practice sessions. Some of the "official classes" were mostly me, as I was asked to sub. That ups/improves the stats some, as in addition to being able to pick songs I know and like, you do just give extra energy being up front. So I did have some 500+ calorie burns registered. One day with 7000+ steps ... Still not quite getting the HR up. Looking at the stats you can see just how much it can vary from class to class. Some days being in the "cardio zone" a majority of the time, other times not getting up there at all. So many different variables can contribute! Coriann is my new Thursday class. She has uber energy and prepared playlists (so no wasted time). A little more warm up/cool down than is my preference, and I'm still learning songs ... or I know the songs, but she has different steps. Also ... lots of crazy kids which are a bit of a distraction there. Kirsten subbed one week ~ I'd gone to her classes quite a while ago. Overall, a good month. The subbing (and upcoming summer subbing) has motivated me more, and in addition to official stats recorded here, I've done quite a bit of additional practice.

July 2017
Quite a few classes this month! Several full hour sessions on my own, plus additional practice that didn't even make this list. I had some subbing opportunities, and that is always a little incentive to brush up on some of the songs/steps.  With my Wednesday church having its floors refinished (thus gym closed for two weeks) I was able to hit Hollie (SunsetRidge ... it's been ages) and Southziders. I went to Southziders again on July 24 when Debbie cancelled class. Cancellation of classes on the July 4th holiday pushed me to the alternate MZL location. I had been there a time or two before, and somehow had it in my head as being further away than it actually is. Going back that Tuesday ... got me over the anxiety and I hit it again, getting in double duty for a few Thursdays.  While some classes had soggy stats, I had a few highs.

The numbers to beat this year!

Streaks!

My Monday-Thursday Zumba schedule is pretty routine at this point. I got out of the habit a bit for a few months there (Nov/Dec of 2016, Jan/Feb of 2017) I'm glad to be back to some consistency.

During the school year, I can't really hit Fridays, as the free classes here start at 9:00, and the middle school carpool runs about 9:30. I try to hit a Friday if middle school is out ... and as school wrapped up, Fridays made it onto the schedule with regularity.  I did some switch up of classes ... while I loved my Southziders, it was a bit further away in Draper (about 20min) and started a bit later, which just took up most of my morning. So my Mondays are now with Debbie in Daybreak.

I was asked to sub some in June (and will be subbing in July) and that has motivated me to practice more, even getting in a Sat/Sun session to keep up quite the streak there at the end of June!

My sister and SIL came to my class one Tuesday in July when they were in town!

Zumba Stats 2016

This is a post in progress ... updated monthly.

Since I started going to Zumba classes a couple years ago, I've tracked my stats (steps, calorie burn estimate, heart rate, etc.) from the beginning. At first, I'd grab a photo of my Fitbit and Polar, and post the picture on Facebook. Then I started keeping an excel file, and posting the results monthly. For 2016, I just kpet a running blog post, updating it each month.

I regularly hit four classes a week, Southziders on Monday, Marian's class on Tuesday, MZL on Wednesday and MountainView on Thursday. I'll try to fit in a Friday if I can make it work. I wear the Fitbit ChargeHR and the Fitbit One. This year, I also added the Sosche/Digifit combo for some additional heart rate estimates.

Numbers vary from class to class ... sometimes I don't know the steps, or I'm just not feeling it that day. The length of the class will impact calorie burn and steps too of course. Goals are at least 400 calorie burn on both Fitbits, 7000+ steps in the hour, and TRYING for a HR average of 130+ (this is SO hard, my HR just doesn't seem to bump up). Starting 2016, my all time records for my FitbitCharge is a HR average of 142, and a calorie burn of 591. The Sosche is coming in quite a bit higher on all counts, so it will have it's own set of record setting stats, I'm still on a learning curve with it.

I'll continually update this post,  so although it will look familiar,
it will have new information added each month.

January 2016
I only hit 14 Zumba classes in January, which was slightly better than December, but not up to my usual activity ... especially considering the whole "new years resolutions" motivation for the month.  I was building myself back up I guess. Two classes the first week, three the next, four the following, and finally the full five for the last week of the month. In addition to my regulars, I was able to hit a couple Fridays, once with Debbie, and once with Nicole. I've highlighted the highs for the month, nothing quite record setting, but some good stats. With the Scosche being new, the January highlighted numbers are the ones to beat ...

February 2016

February is a short month ... even with an extra day this year. Still, I got more classes in than I did in January. 20 in total. With some early morning basketball practices on Fridays, I was able to hit five classes a week a few times this month (with both Debbie and Nicole). No double days. I've highlighted the top stats for the month. Steps beat January's high, as did the ChargeHR calorie estimate (just squeaking in the last, extra day in February).

March 2016

22 classes in March. I did pretty good hitting Friday classes this month (the middle school was out a few times which alleviates the carpool conflict), even doing an hour all on my own one week. No night classes (double days), I'm not sure if I'll ever get back to that. I just don't have the energy in the evenings! I did hit one new high (steps) this month. I love seeing how the stats stack up class to class, month to month!

April 2016
Only 15 hours of Zumba in all of April ... not only was the number of classes wimpy, but so were my stats for many of them! My highs were decent, competitive with the previous months (The ChargeHR is actually a new record). The Scosche high probably WOULD have been on April25 also, except I forgot to charge it. I missed a Monday and a Wednesday ... just because I wasn't feeling up to it those days. I hit one Friday class in April .... on day 1.

May 2016
22 hours/classes/sessions of Zumba in May. That ties for March! I was able to hit a Friday class, a couple of Saturday classes, and even got in a double dose one day (the second hour was just me practicing, but still ...)  Some highs, some lows ... a new "steps" high at 7980. Almost into 8000+ (it does help when the class runs long *Ü*)

June 2016
There was a LOT of dancing in June! Marian, the instructor for my Tuesday classes, was taking the next couple months off. Rather than cancelling and then trying to rebuild the class, she asked if I would sub for summer. As I have the key to the building, and two little boys who love basketball, we've been making tons of trips to the church gym where they can play, and I can practice. It's been great for me to be able to go over the songs and steps and gain confidence as I attempt to teach once a week now. I also hit some Friday and Saturday classes. 21 classes (with instructors/other students), and 14 hours on my own ... a total of 35 Zumba sessions for June! New highs too! Charge HR calorie burn of 522 is a new record (this year anyway). That day also holds this month's highs on "time in cardio zone" and average heart rate, as well as Scosche stats. New all time highs on the One estimated calorie burn (at 571) and 8146 steps ... granted that MZL class did exceed the hour, but still, new records!

July 2016
24 Zumba classes, and 7 hours on my own ... that's 31 Zumba sessions for July. I guess the novelty of going to the church for Zumba Practice/Basketball wore off for both the boys and me, as those practice sessions petered out as the month went on. Interesting to see how the highs in each category happened on different days, in different classes ... I'm still not sure I understand how all these gadgets work, but I love looking at the numbers! I hit several Saturday classes, and made it to a couple classes I hadn't been to before (or it's been a LONG time ... HeatherB, Coriann and Melody/Underground).

August 2016
24 classes for August, again (same as July). I consistently hit my Mon-Fri, and got in one Saturday session. Hit my highs at the start of the month ... I remember that class. It was Marian's, that I was running while she was gone for the summer. I only lead four songs myself, but by planning the playlist, had put my favorites and songs I knew, and was really able to push it that day! The stats sure can vary from day to day and class to class. With the end of August came the start of school, which doesn't impact ME too much ... just Fridays, as with middle school carpool, I can't hit the classes. I was able to do an hour on my own the first Friday kids were back at school. We'll see if I can keep it up!
 September 2016
21 classes for September. Had a Monday off (Labor Day) and while I hit a couple Fridays, they are now mostly a miss. I did try a new Saturday class, but alas, it ended already. I did hit a new high with my ChargeHR calorie estimate ... 549 is now the number to beat there. Some other good numbers, but also some really low stats some days. It can really vary, from a class where I don't know the songs, to my energy (or lack thereof) for the day.

October 2016
October wasn't uber impressive for Zumba. 20 classes. Only hit a 500 calorie burn once with the Fitbit trackers. Only one day with 7000+ steps. I did get in a couple Friday classes though, and even a Saturday session.

November 2016
Not a great November ... not sure if I'm just tired, or a little burned out, or what. Only 16 classes this month. The Thanksgiving weekend really only excused me from Thursdays class. My usual MountainView was taking the week off, but there were others that were still on. If I'd wanted to, I could have hit one. As it was, I took the day before off too (the kids were out of school and I just wasn't feeling it). I didn't hit any Friday classes (middle school's late start conflicts), nor any Saturday ones. My numbers for the ones I went to weren't very impressive either. I highlighted the "highs" even though they weren't that high.

December 2016

Oy, pitiful! I think I just let this year (the slow but steady weight gain, the fatigue and low energy) get to me. Nothing seemed to be working, so I decided to do nothing (or very little). Add to that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and the great room rearrange at home, which took up a lot of time and energy and ... I skipped several Zumba classes. Only seven sessions. Only got the HR up a couple of times. Hopefully, this little rest will reset me and I'll be ready to start back up and scheduled and routines resume with the new year. Stay tuned. A new Zumba 2017 will be showing up ...

MountainView - January 21, 2016
Marian had a meeting so we three "babes in black" ran the class. I do tend to get higher numbers when I'm up on stage, and when I get to pick the playlist ... as it's all songs I know and like. So it's not surprising this day was one of the highest in January.

All shapes, sizes and colors are welcome at Zumba.

... and see, I'm not the only gadget girl!
Even if you don't have a Fitbit, I'll be your friend ;)

Zumba Stats Catch-Up (2015)

For a while there, at the end of each month, I'd do a blog post reflecting on the Zumba classes I attended. I'd post pictures, and my stats, and give the record high and any other pertinent information. I slacked after September, and didn't get a ZumbaStats post up for Oct/Nov/Dec ... so here it is, finally. I really don't know if it's of interest to anyone else, but I like to reflect on how my classes compare

25 Zumba classes in October. I did double on Thursdays (and one Monday), hit several Fridays, and even got in a Saturday. In addition to my regular classes (Southziders, Marian's, MZL and MountainView) I was able to get to Debbie in Daybreak, Becky and Hollie, tried out Nina's paid class, and even made it back to "the Underground" (which was being held at Crossroads Gym, which then promptly closed right as I rediscovered it!). I only missed one regular day, when the elementary school had their Halloween parade at the same time as my MoutainView class. No new "highs" for this month. Hit an average HR of 130 only once, 7000+ steps six times. I threw in a few TRACK stats just to compare the numbers walking/jogging to my Zumba.

22 Zumba classes in November. In addition to my regular classes, I was able to hit  Becky&Hollie, Debbie and Nina's paid class. Basketball began to monopolize Thursday nights, so after the first couple of weeks, I was no longer able to attend Marian's evening class for my double dose. I did skip out on Thanksgiving and the day after, but got my highest stats of the month on Monday(Southziders) after that break (500+ calorie estimate, average HR 135). I was able to get 7000+ steps three times during the month ... all at MZL.

Only 12 Zumba classes for all of December ... I was struggling. Between the holiday season, feeling sick, and just being in a slump, it wasn't a great month. I only hit my regular classes. I only made it to Southziders once, MountainView took the last couple weeks off, and for a couple weeks there I only hit one class a week. I still got some some great numbers (at the beginning of the month). A high of 591/546 for calorie burn, and 142 for the average HR! I really didn't FEEL like I was doing much more that day, and joked that maybe it was because I couldn't really breathe with my cold. I had another day of average HR at 130, and exceeded 7000 steps four times.

So ... to look back, I picked out some of my "highs"
All my regular classes made the list at some point.
These are the stats to try to beat in 2016!

Zumba September 2015

Wacky Wednesday at MZL - Think Pink!
September 30, 2015

I went to Zumba 24 times in September ... that is down a few from the previous months. There wasn't class on Labor Day (Sep7) and I missed a Friday class to help out at the elementary school. The Fridays I did hit, I went back to Heather Jones's classes, but alas, she has decided to discontinue her free Friday :(  There are some Friday classes here in West Jordan, but they all start at 9:00ish, and that just doesn't work with the middle school's late start (I'm dropping #3 off at 9:30). So I tried on Friday by myself, and that may be what I have to do ...

My numbers were a little lower this month. I know I felt some fatigue, just really haven't had as much energy.  It's been hard to get the heart rate up, the ChargeHR has almost always been 100calories under the FitbitOne this month. I also noticed, that when I was in charge of picking my songs, I was staying away from some of my more energetic ones (Terrible, Estoy) in favor of "easier" ones ...

Here are the stats for September.

Marian was still out of town after the Labor Day weekend and asked me to sub for that class (0908). I didn't do it all myself, as there are other "helpers" to fill the hour. I did get my highest calorie average and highest average heart rate that day (which makes sense, as I'm up front, and picking my favorite songs I know the best). MZL almost always gets the award for the highest step count, and they did this month (0902) with 7421.

There was a Southziders Neon party on a Friday night (the Friday I missed no less) ... and I didn't have anything going that night (Hubs was off on a hike) but my motivation was low. I didn't get any Zumba classes on Saturday, but I did do a little 20min workshop with the 9-11 year old girls in our area. That was fun.

I did throw in a TRACK workout, just to see how the stats compare to Zumba. I would alternate jogging and walking as needed while I watched my son's basketball practice (0929). It actually did come in higher for the calorie estimate and step count (with 8864 steps!) ... but I sure do enjoy Zumba more! I don't jog for enjoyment, but I can say that Zumba is something I look forward to.

Hopefully I can get my heart rate up more next month!

I didn't get many pictures in September -
Here are a couple I snagged from the various group pages.

Zumba August 2015

Marian's Morning Class in West Jordan.

August 2015 Stats

I hit 29 Zumba classes during the month of August. I did double (back to back even) classes on Monday mornings, and double classes on Thursdays (one in the morning, one in the evening). I didn't hit any Saturday classes in August though ... with basketball games and family outings, Saturday mornings were pretty booked, and it's a sleep in day ;) With school starting back up, I got back to Heather Jones's class on Friday (a little further, but the only one that works with the late start at the middle school). It was fun to get back to that one!

I like to post my "winners" for the month ... the highest average heart rate, highest steps, highest calorie burn. Sometimes the three different stats are achieved by three different classes, and sometimes they all are credited to one. That is the case this month. My Wednesday, August 19th class with MZL hit highs in all three categories. Class was 66minutes long, and those few extra minutes do help push the final stats up, but it was a great class that day.

Here are a few snapshots from some of the other classes this month ...
(Well, I guess they are all actually from Mountain View. Thursdays in West Jordan).

Silvia is one of the helpers at Mountain View. She has the moves!

Kristen Swinton and I have been Facebook friends for a while, but had never met in real life. She is a Zumba instructor over on the East side (Cottonwood/Holiday area) with both free and paid classes. She had a Thursday free and decided to come hit a class with us at MountainView. It was fun to meet her in person, and of course we had her do a few numbers too!

One week at Mountain View, we didn't have a key to the building. That can't stop us though! Marian plugged her ipad into her car speakers and we Zumba-ed in the parking lot. It was a nice cool morning with a breeze, and it was almost preferable to the hot church gym! It's not the first time this has happened, and it probably won't be the last!
